How to climb Ben Nevis during winter: A guide from Glasgow Queen Street to the summit

Read more The full guide to climbing Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak, at winter. The journey begins at Glasgow Queen Street railway station before travelling to Fort William and then hiking to the summit of the mountain including directions, tips, incredible scenery and blizzards. ------------------- HI! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ____________ Having recently relocated to Scotland, Ben Nevis was on the top of my list for my The Sports Explorer journey's and it didn't disappoint. I started my journey from Glasgow Queen Street, at this is the only main terminus direct trains depart from. There are 3 trains a day. The summit sits at a height of 4,411 feet and is not only the highest point in the United Kingdom, but also until you reach Norway. Thankfully, it is a fairly straightforward climb, with it's well laid out mountain path guiding hikers to the summit. You will start at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre, where there is a gift shop and snacks and drinks to be bought. The Visitor Centre is a short taxi ride from Fort William. Once you are on the mountain trail, you'll head uphill in a southbound direction climbing out of the Glen. The path on this stretch is the steepest you will encounter. After around 2 hours, you will reach Lochen Meall, known as 'halfway lake', it is here the path offers it's only moment of flat walking so enjoy it! For the next phase, you will hike away from Lochen Meall and continue upwards before entering a switchback section. Whilst this is not the steepest section, it is tough going, especially in winter conditions. Finally, you will make a left turn and follow the path (and cairns) all the way to the summit - don't stray form the path as the summit is surrounded by deep gorges that would be deadly if you were to fall. As you pass the old Observatory and the emergency shelter, you will see the summit a few feet away. If you are to hike Ben Nevis in the winter, make sure you take plenty of supplies, and wear the correct clothing. The proper layers, water, a hot drink and food are all required. And whilst you may not need hiking polls going up the mountain, they are a great help coming down. Thank you for watching this latest video. The Sports Explorer channel is all about telling the story of our world through sport & adventure, so I hope you have fun on the mountain when you do the hike.

Episode 14: South Lake Tahoe's most accessible hike - A guide to the Van Sickle Trail

Read more The Sports Explorer's complete guide to hiking South Lake Tahoe's Van Sickle Trail. This is a hike that is walking distance from Heavenly Village and is a perfect way to explore Heavenly Mountain. ------------------- HI! I'm Tom Bushell, The Sports Explorer. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ South Lake Tahoe is no doubt a wonderful hiking location, but the Van Sickle Trail has one great advantage, it is within walking distance of the Heavinly Village so therefore most likely within easy reach of your hotel. It is a moderate hike, that weaves through alpine forests, offers plenty of stunning vista areas and includes a waterfall in which many make the half-way point before walking back down the mountain. The start point is behind the Raley's store in the Heavinly Village shopping complex. There are plenty of coffee shops that provide a good source of caffeine before you get going. You'll find the start as you enter the Van Sickle State Park, you'll then walk up a service road underneath the Gondola before you reach an information point which has pocket maps, restrooms and information about the area. Head left continuing up the road before you reach the official trailhead, again marked with a map. It is here you'll turn onto the trail properly and then follow the orabge markings. You'll walk through the alpine forest and eventually come to a VIsta sign which marks a route up some boulders. It is well worth taking this to reach a high point where you get the most stunning of views across Lake Tahoe. Once you decide to carry on, you'll keep following the orange markings, also marking the Lake Tahoe Rim Trail before you begin to come out of the alpine forest and then climb the mountain on a well maintained switchback trail. You'll get to the small waterfall when you reach the bridge. This is a perfect location for lunch and to cool the feet off with a little dip in the water. Here you can either carry on another 3.5 miles to reach the Rim Trail or use this as your turnaround point and head back down the trail the same way you came up. The Van Sickle Trail is a great one day adventure whilst in South Lake Tahoe. The whole hike shouldn't take you more than 3 hours, but don't forget to take your time to soak up the views. You could also combine the trail with a trip up the mountain on the less active, but no less spectacular Gondola ride. Thanks for watching the video. In next week's video, I'll showcase my top 5 hikes to do in South Lake Tahoe.

Episode 13: How to conquer Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay in One Day

Read more The Sports Explorer's complete guide to hiking Lake Tahoe's Rubicon Trail, kayaking Emerald Bay to Fannette Island and exploring the Lower Eagle Falls trail near South Lake Tahoe. ------------------- HI! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ In the first of my feature videos based around Lake Tahoe, I'm showcasing to you how to hike the glorious Rubicon Trail at Emerald Bay in California. The trail begins at the Eagle Point campground and stretches all the way around to Rubicon Point, 13 miles away. As it is a turnaround trail however, you can switch back on yourself whenever you feel like. In the above video I guide you on hiking to the beach area, where the Vikingsholm estate is located, take a kayak on the water to Fannette Island and also hike the short route to the Lower Eagle Falls. The Rubicon Trail to the beach is easy-moderate. You'll start with a downward stretch all the way to the bridge area, with Lake Tahoe on your right. On a clear day, you'll experience the most amazing views and landscapes from the mountains to the lake itself. There a few seating areas on the trail where you can stop and soak it all up. You'll eventually cross the bridge that crosses the Lower Eagle Falls ridge, where you'll turn right towards the beach. Here you will find the Vikingsholm estate and visitor centre. You'll be able to read about the history of Vikingsholm, and its founder, Lora Knight who built the area up to be an outdoor adventurers playground. You can also get a tour of the mansion. It is also from the beach area where you can rent a kayak. You'll pay $35 for an hour, which is enough time to kayak over to Fannette Island and back. Once at the island, you'll also have time to stop for lunch, or take a hike around the island. As you return towards the start point at Eagle Campground, you can take a right as you get to the Lower Eagle Falls bridge and head up the short path to the Lower Eagle Falls. The best time to see the falls in full flow is in Spring when the winter ice melts, but it is still worth a visit at any time of the year. You'll then walk back down to the bridge before you begin the return leg, uphill on the Rubicon Trail back to the start point. There is a car park at the start point, but it does get busy so you might might like to consider getting a taxi to the start point. Once you complete your hike, you can walk through the campground to the welcome hut where you can use their wi-fi to order a ride home. I hope you enjoy the video, and are inspired to visit Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe. It's an incredible place.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ Nashville around the world is of course known for one thing, being the Music City. And when you arrive into this amazing city, you are never far away from its music culture and heritage. However, the Music City is also a thriving city for sport and adventure. From a sporting perspective, there are major franchises such as the Tennessee Titans, Nashville Predators and Nashville SC to enjoy whilst the Nashville Sounds represent the city within Minor League Baseball. And in August 2021 the city welcomed a new sporting aspect to its streets, as IndyCar raced around the city for the first time in the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix. I visited the city to soak up the event, speak to fans about their love of the IndyCar series and their delight that they can now watch the series in their own backyard. And with the success of the event, there is no doubting that the sound of motorsport is a welcome new sound to the Music City. The event has been described as the beginnings of a new iconic IndyCar event, and has the potential to reach the heights of other famous street circuits around the world. With a city like Nashville, withy its rich culture, atmosphere and party spirit, motorsport fits ever so well - and offers sport fans a brilliant experience each year. A day of race action before a walk into the thriving Broadway area is what many fans had in mind. The race weekend consisted of three days of track action with IndyCar being the star showing but other categories of racing also entertained fans around the circuit that took in the streets around around the Nissan Stadium, the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge and the Rolling Mill Hill area of Downtown. By all accounts, Nashville can now say that horsepower is well and truly a new sound of the Music City. Thanks for watching the video as I explore the world through sport & adventure. I am currently travelling across America and you can more watch more videos in the links above or head to the channel page.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ A few years ago, I read Bill Bryson's 'Walk in the Woods' book. It was an account of his attempt to hike the entire length of the world's longest hiking route, the spectacular Appalachian Trail. Sadly, without 7/8 months up my sleeve, I had to embark on a slightly shorter adventure. What I did have time for however - and I made sure a visit was part of my cross-America series - was to experience the beginnings of the AT, pass through its arch that marks the start of the Approach Trail and explore the hiking routes within the area of the Southern Terminus in Georgia. All the hiking routes that lead to the AT for real begin at The Amicalola State Park visitor centre, here you'll be able to pick up maps, refreshments, and if you haven't done so already, book a night at the Len Foote Hike Inn... as the lodge has an office behind the visitor centre. Below is my step-by-step guide to a great weekend hiking adventure that takes in the Amicalola Falls, the Hike Inn Trail and a night's stay at the Hike Inn plus a southbound hike on the AT Approach Trail. - At the Amicalola State Park visitor Centre, you can book your night's stay at the Hike Inn, or book online here (XXXXXX). As I mention in the video, if you are hiking during the summer months you can get a room at half price at just $75. - Once you have your night's stay at the Hike Inn booked, you actually need to drive up the mountain to the Top of the Falls car park which is where the Hike Inn and Approach Trails officially begin. You can leave your car here overnight. You'll be given a parking pass once you have booked your Hike Inn stay. - If however you want to begin your hike at the famous AT arch, which sits behind the visitor centre, you can walk down the falls, and then begin officially from the arch. - You'll turn left as soon as you pass under the arch, following the West Ridge Staircase trail (blue) to the Top of the Falls. It's a great warm up to your weekend of hiking as you climb the 600 steps to reach the top of the Amicalola Falls, with the views getting even more impressive the further you climb. - Once you reach the top, you'll be back at the car park where you have parked and from here you'll take the path which is well signposted at the back of the car park for the AT Approach and the Hike Inn trail. - The two trails begin together, so you'll see blue (AT Approach) markings and green (Hike Inn trail markings) as you begin. - Soon after you begin, the Hike Inn trail will head off to the right whilst the AT Approach continues straight forward. Head right on the Hike Inn trail and it's 4.8 miles to your night of comfort. - The trail is not technically difficult, but does see you climb around 600/700 feet in elevation. There are moments where the humidity if you're hiking in the summer will sap your energy, but taking a mile at a time makes things manageable. - Once at the Hike Inn, dinner and breakfast will be provided with your booking. Showers, brilliant vista seating areas and comfortable bunk bed rooms also make it a remote, isolated oasis. The rooms do not have power outlets, but there is a shared solar powered charging point for any devices you need to plug in. - Once you have enjoyed your night's stay, you can either hike back down the way you came up, or head right from the front door of the Hike Inn and continue on the green Hike Inn trail for a mile. - You'll then reach the t-junction where you can either turn right and continue to Springer Mountain, the official start point of the AT, or turn left to hike southbound on the Approach Trail where after around 6 miles you'll reach the Top of the Falls car park to complete your adventure. For all tips in more detail such as avoiding bears watch the video above to plan your AT Approach trail adventure. Enjoy your hiking and thanks for watching!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ My final adventure in Washington D.C. is a brilliant kayak along the Potomac River to take in the city's sights from the water. The adventure begins at the Key Bridge Boathouse in Georgetown on the northern shore of the Potomac. You can rent kayaks here for $20 per hour, although I highly suggest two hours so you're not rushing whilst on the water. You'll need to pre-book your kayak online here: https://boatingindc.com/boathouses/key-bridge-boathouse/ Once you have arrived at Key Bridge Boathouse, registered, picked up your lifejacket and boarded your kayak you are able to travel north or south. For me, going south is the best option, it is in this direction you'll come across some of Washington D.C.'s best sights. You'll start by paddling underneath the bridge, then soon pass the bustling riverside restaurant and bar area of Georgetown once you have passed the Georgetown Waterfront Park on your left. Next to witness is The Watergate buildings and then the John F. Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts. A little further down the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial come into view, two of the city's most spectacular landmarks. And from the water, you get a perfect view of the two structures without any obstacles in the way, other than the glorious Potomac stretching out in front of you. After this point, you'll loop back around the Theodore Roosevelt Island, which will be on your right as you head north with Virginia on your left. You can hike on the island with numerous trails to be explored. Once you have travelled north up the channel, you will soon be approaching the Key Bridge and back within reach of the Boathouse. Kayaking along the Potomac is a wonderful way to explore Washington D.C., you are away from the hustle and bustle of the key tourist hotspots, and the Potomac is a great river to explore in itself. My best tip would be to head out in the late afternoon sunshine, you'll be sharing the water with rowers, paddle boarders and small leisure boats, the with the width of the Potomac there is plenty of room. Once you are back on dry land and as you come out of the Boathouse, turn right and you'll find The Berliner, a brilliant spot for a refreshing drink post kayak. If you then walk back down the river through the park, you'll find numerous restaurants and bars to enjoy on he water's edge Thanks for watching. In the next episode, I head south to Georgia to show you exactly how to hike the approach trails to the Appalachian Trail, including staying at a remote lodge in the middle of the forest and all the tips you need to know before embarking on this hiking adventure. See you next week.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ Washington D.C. is best known around the world as the home of US politics, often the centrepiece of global conversations, but the capital of America is also a thriving sports destination too. D.C. United, the city's MLS team - and one of the founding members of the league back in 1996 - is one of the city's best sporting attractions. The team, who have won the MLS Cup four times play their home games at Audi Field, a 20,000 capacity stadium in the south of the city. Having relocated from the RFK Stadium, this area of Washington is now seeing speedy gentrification with new apartment buildings, restaurants and bars all being built around the stadium. It takes around 20 minutes on the bus or metro from Downtown to reach Audi Field. One of the best ways to attend a D.C. United game is to join in the festivities with the Screaming Eagles Supporter's Group. Having had a thriving tailgate culture in the many parking lots around RFK Stadium, they haven't been put off by the lack of free space at the team's new home. They now gather before a game at the Mathew Henson Earth Conversation Centre, around a 5-minute walk south of Audi Field. If you are visiting the city and love watching a live football game, then it's a must to visit the Screaming Eagles before the game where you will be welcomed into the party, offered drinks (which are very cheap compared to inside the stadium) and meet some great people who are passionate about football. You can also continue your time with the most passionate of D.C. United fans during the game too if you have secured a ticket within the North Stand. In this stand is a mix of standing and seated tickets, and it is by far the best stand to experience the best of the atmosphere within the ground. I loved my visit, and I was keen to show how sporting teams in Washington D.C. are able to bring a city together which is often thought as as being divided. The Screaming Eagles' motto is 'All Welcome, All United" which is certainly what I found when I enjoyed the team's biggest game of the season against the New York Red Bulls alongside my new Screaming Eagles friends. Whilst down the road at the Capitol Building, or the White House, where there might be fierce rivalries in play, heated debates and a constant disagreement on many views, just a few minutes down the road there is a sporting club that brings everyone together. D.C. United may have taken the word 'United' from the traditional English use of it in its football clubs, but in actual fact, their aren't many other clubs in the world where 'United' is more fitting. If you are a football fan, and visiting Washington D.C. then I highly recommend getting ticket for a D.C. United game... and say hi to the Screaming Eagles whilst you're at it. They would love to see you. Thanks for watching. In the next episode, I complete my time in Washington D.C. with a stunning kayak along the Potomac River to take in some of the city's greatest sights.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ If you are travelling and without those things such as cars, finding great adventures and then reaching them can often be tricky, especially if you are staying in a city. Much like the incredible Hudson Highlands 90 minutes from New York City on the train, Washington D.C. also has great access to brilliant adventures. Rock Creek Park is no exception. The park is enormous and sits north of the Downtown area of the city. It is infact America's 3rd established National Park back at the end of the 19th Century and now it is a paradise for hikers, cyclists, joggers and picnic lovers! Please see below to follow how I hiked from top to bottom of Rock Creek Park, a duration on 7 miles but all fairly flat with some undulation along the way. - Take a bus from Downtown to Silver Spring - it will cost you $2. - At Silver Spring bus station, change onto the Number 1 bus towards Friendship Heights and get off at Grubb Road. It'll take just a few minutes. - Stock up on supplies such as water at Rock Creek Shopping Centre and grab breakfast at the iconic Parkway Deli. - Head south on the road for a few minutes then turn right onto the Boundary Trail. - You'll soon come to a junction with the Valley Trail. Here you need to turn left. - When you arrive at the T-Junction, keep to the right and keep Rock Creek on your right hand side. - Walk underneath the small road bridge, then over a foot bridge. - You can turn off the main trail to the right to find a nice pebble beach area for a resting stop. - Carry on south on Valley Trail until you come to Picnic Grove 6. Here there are restrooms, picnic benches and plenty of areas to relax. This is about the half-way mark. - Track back to where Picnic Grove 6 opens up and step down to where the ld Milk House Ford used to be. - Here, you can either cross the river along the rocks, or use the bridge close by. - Head west on the yellow marked trail and follow it around to the left. - Eventually you will come to the former sight of Fort DeRussy - an old Civil War fort that served to protect the city of Washington. - Carry on back down the path until you get back to the flowing Rock Creek. - Cross the bridge back over the water and then turn right to rejoin the Valley Trail. - Continue south past the likes of Rapids Bridge and Boulder Bridge. - Boulder Bridge is another nice spot for a rest. - As you then pass Pulpit Rock, you will turn right onto the Roosevelt Trail which links you to the Western Ridge Trail. - From here, head south again for a few minutes until you reach Peirce Mill where you can call it a day. - From Peirce Mill, you can either get a ride sharing lift or walk to nearby Cleveland Park along Tilden Street then south on Connecticut Avenue where you will find shops, restaurants and bars for a well deserved pot hike refreshment. From Cleveland Park you can also take the bus back to Downtown. I loved this first adventure in Washington D.C. - a perfect start to exploring the city through sport & adventure. In next week's episode, I'm joining one of America's longest serving soccer supporters groups to showcase exactly how you should attend a DC United game. Thanks for watching.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ It's easy to only be attracted to attending big sporting events that a destination has to offer. In New York? You go to the Yankees. In London, a day at Wimbledon? You get the drift... but sometimes if you look under the radar a little you find some amazing sporting events to attend. That is certainly the case in Altoona, a small town in central Pennsylvania and home to two famous destinations.  The first is the Horseshoe Curve - the engineering marvel on the Pennsylvania railroad where the tracks complete a full u-turn reducing the incline as the line climbs the Allegheny mountains.  Secondly, Altoona Curve - the baseball team that represents countless counties in the area, and owes it name to the aforementioned railway.  Altoona Curve offers so much when it comes to enjoying live sport. A classic ballpark that is in no way overwhelming. It's intimate setting means you feel completely apart of the occasion, rather than just another ticket holder.  The ballpark itself, named the People's Natural Gas Field, has many seating areas - ranging from picnic style seating at field level, terraced seating, adult only areas, family areas and a hill where families can play - all whilst the baseball game supplies the drama for the evening.  What is unique about watching baseball in Altoona is the fact that right next door is Lakemont Park. A recreation park home to mini-golf, kart tracks and a rollercoaster. Not just any rollercoaster either, this is the famous Skyliner, which called New York home in the 1960's and 70's until a move to Altoona in the 1980's. The Skyliner sits just the other side of the boundary fence to the ballpark, meaning when you take a ride you have incredible views of the action within the PNG Field (to give it its shorter name). And as for as I know, watching live sport whilst doing loop the loops is a pretty unique experience. A baseball game here, where many stars of the future are honing their skills, is a brilliant way to not only take in one of America's oldest sporting traditions but soak up the real culture and atmosphere of a destination. You chat to people, understand the area; it's at these more intimate sporting events where you really get to know a the area you are visiting. Find out more about Altoona Curve here: https://www.milb.com/altoona Altoona is 5 hours on the train from New York, 4 from Philadelphia, 3 from Pittsburgh and around 5 hours from Washington DC.  _____________________ Thanks for watching the video, I hope you can enjoy my journey across America as I tell the story of the country through sport & adventure through the summer of 2021. What with Pittsburgh's endless amount of hiking trails, kayaking and live sport options this is an area which loves the outdoors, and the thrill of live sport. I have travelled an hour north of Pittsburgh by hiring a car to visit Foxburg, a small village which is the home of the oldest continuously used golf club in America. It all began when Joseph Mickle Fox in the late 19th century travelled to the UK for a cricket match he was involved in. Whilst there he decided to take a look at St, Andrews Golf Course in Scotland. This is where he met, and struck up a friendship with Tom Morris, known as the 'Grand Old Man of Golf'. Morris showcased the game of golf to Fox, and the American was truly smitten with this new game he had discovered. Seeing his joy, Morris gave Fox some essentials - clubs, balls, the rules... and with that Joseph Fox headed home to Pennsylvania excited to build a few golf holes on his estate so he could play the game. It was here where he noticed the game was catching on. Friends would regularly play with him and there was a general excitement about this new game. Witnessing the enthusiasm, Fox then decided to donate some of his nearby land in order for a bigger course to be built. It was named the Foxburg Country Club and included lawn tennis courts, picnic areas and eventually, nine holes - some of which were rather inspired by the features Fox had come across at St. Andrews. It was 1887 when Foxburg Country Club was established, and it has been proven at senate trials that Foxburg is the oldest continuously-in-use golf course in America. That is quite a status for this charming little village - and well worth a visit for anyone near the area, who loves their golf. It is sad however to see that as golf swept America, Foxburg was left behind. It may well house the American Golf Hall of Fame and have the all important 'Oldest Golf Course in the United States' sign on the roadside, but you do feel it should have more recognition, more exposure. Or perhaps, the fact that the course that got golf started in America is somewhat of a secret only adds to its charm. You can only reach Foxburg Country Club by car. It is about an hour's drive north of Pittsburgh and sits just off the I80 Interstate. Prices for a round start from $12. _____________________ Thanks for watching the video, I hope you can enjoy my journey across America as I tell the story of the country through sport & adventure through the summer of 2021. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ In this second episode from my time exploring Pittsburgh, I rent a kayak from Kayak Pittsburgh Downtown to head out on an adventure on the water. And along the way, I not only experience the great Allegheny River, but also one of America's best ballparks. Much like in my previous episode, this is a great example of how Pittsburgh mixes adventures within an urban hub and live sport. It will cost you $19 to rent a kayak for an hour. You do need to book online but unless there is a major group booking you should be fine. When I booked, there was an issue with the website, so I just turned up and there were plenty of kayaks available. Website: https://www.ventureoutdoors.org/kayak-pittsburgh/ Kayak Pittsburgh Downtown is situated underneath the Roberto Clemente Bridge on the north shore, right next to PNC Park. There a few rules to remember, mostly about not getting in the way of boat traffic on the rivers, but all in all, you are free to explore as much as you like in which ever direction you wish to go. The current tends to be pretty manageable so you shouldn't have any issues paddling against it - if the current gets too strong, you won't be able to rent a kayak. What is great for sport lovers as well as adventure seekers is the fact you can combine the two so well in Pittsburgh. With PNC Park on the north shore, you can get right up to this historic sporting venue. You will even be able to see into the stadium's big screen, meaning if you time your kayak for when the Pirates are playing, you will not only be able to pick up the atmosphere from PNC Park, but also watch the game on the screen. The best of both worlds! - something I've said a few times about Pittsburgh. Of course, with baseball games being a little longer than an hour, once you have returned your kayak you can head straight into PNC Park to take in the city from another angle, and the views you get of both the Allegheny River and Downtown Pittsburgh are extraordinary. Three tips to enjoy PNC Park to the fullest: 1. Buy a ticket in section 317. This is where you will find the cheapest $20 tickets and also it is where you want to be to get the very best views of the city. *The only bar on the 3rd tier is also right next to 317, should you be interested. 2. Don't worry about turning up with bags. There is a no bag policy at PNC Park but there is a bag drop right outside. So if you have been out kayaking and need to store backpacks, you can do. It will cost $10. 3. Download the MLB app. It's free to download, but this is the only way your ticket will be scanned - so that it is a contactless process. All details are in the video above. I hope in this video you get another really good insight into what Pittsburgh can offer. It may not be on every international travellers bucket list, but if it is adventure you are looking for and you love to experience live sport, Pittsburgh really does tick all the boxes. _________________ Thanks for watching the video, I hope you can enjoy my journey across America as I tell the story of the country through sport & adventure through the summer of 2021. It's no surprise that Pennsylvania has the most open trails in the USA. In Pittsburgh alone, there are a multitude of trails to hike close to the city - including the wonderful Mount Washington. Situated on the south side of of Pittsburgh, the trails that weave through the woodlands are a breath of fresh air compared to downtown life, but equally still close enough so you can get the best of both worlds. You'll take the Duquesne Incline from river level to reach the Emerald View Park trail, which begins at the Points of View statue - a walk to your right once disembarked from the incline. It is both at the top of the funicular railway and at Points of View that the incredible vista of Pittsburgh are visible. *TIP: Head up to these high points later in the day as the view can be a little foggy, together with the sun rising from the east that makes the views back to the city not 100% clear in the mornings. From the start point and to follow my footsteps, you'll take the Emerald View trail into the woodlands and follow the path to your right. After around an hour or so walking this moderate trail you will come to an opening and the path will take you to a road named Greenleaf Street. It is this road that will lead you down to the West End Bridge. The bridge will mean a pause to the tranquility of the woodlands, but you will get amazing views of Pittsburgh's three rivers and once over one of Pittsburgh's 446 bridges, you will then join the Three Rivers Heritage trail. This will lead you back towards downtown Pittsburgh past some of America's most iconic sporting venues. Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers and PNC Park, where the Pittsburgh Pirates play will both come into view on your left with the river and more great views of the city on your right. Eventually, you will come to the end of this walking expedition at the Roberto Clemente Bridge. From here you are back in the heart of downtown where you can continue your exploring. ---------------------- Thanks for watching the video, I hope you can enjoy my journey across America as I tell the story of the country through sport & adventure through the summer of 2021. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ If you are staying in New York City and are looking to escape the mayhem of Manhattan for a day, the Hudson Highlands State Park is a perfect day-adventure. From Grand Central, you will get the train to Cold Spring which will take about 90-minutes. *TIP - sit on the left hand side of the train to get the best views of the Hudson as you travel north. The price of a return ticket is $30. Arriving into Cold Spring, you'll walk towards the centre of this quaint little town, there is an excellent coffee shop called Rincon Argentino on the left before you walk underneath the railway onto the main street. The owner has good knowledge of the hiking trails and has great conversation before you embark on your hiking adventure. From Cold Spring you will walk up the town's main street for two blocks before turning left on Fair Street. You will follow this road along until you eventually reach the Park Office which is the start point for many trails in the area. For the Breakneck Ridge hike, you'll need to walk along the Cornish trail and follow signs to the Breakneck Ridge trailhead. The last stretch of this little warm up walk is walking through the tunnel on a mina road. It's a little disconcerting but you'll be through it within a couple of minutes. When you exit you will be greeted by the park officer's who are situated at the beginning of the Breakneck Ridge trail and can talk you through it all. Don't forget to pick up a map, so you can keep checking the route you are taking. From the start, it is a steep 3-hour climb upwards. It's a scramble 90% of the way until you get to USA flag, which is an incredible viewing point and a great spot for a packed lunch. Don't forget to take at least 3-litres of water! You'll need plenty. After the USA flag point, you'll climb again, although from here there are a couple of alternative paths which bypass the steepest of scrambles - but get you to the same point. You're heading for the junction onto the Yellow trail, which marks the point when the climbing is done and you are now heading back downhill towards the Park Office and Cold Spring. The decline begins with rocky steps before turning into a proper path through the woods. Eventually you will join back onto the Cornish trail, the same trail you began on. *TIP - When you arrive back at Cold Spring, get some food and drinks at the wonderful Cold Spring Depot bar. It has a great outdoor terrace and is full of other hikers sharing their stories of the day. Things to remember: - You must take more water than you need. Whilst this hike is doable for non-professional hikers (like me) it will take its toll. I drank a good 3-litres and still wanted more. - I hiked this trail in late June on a hot and humid day. Take a hat, plenty of sunscreen, food and first aid kits. - Don't forget insect repellent. Ticks are in the area and there are warnings about them. It is good practice to regularly reapply. When you get home, take a shower and have thorough check to see if any ticks have attached themselves to you. I was fine, but better to be safe than sorry. - If you are unfamiliar with the area, go at the weekend when other people will be climbing with you. It's comforting knowing other people are around. This hike is incredible, one of the best I've done and well worth the effort it takes. The views, landscapes, and the wonderful town of Cold Spring all make it a must-do adventure for a day from NYC. ---------------------- Thanks for watching the video, I hope you can enjoy my journey across America as I tell the story of the country through sport & adventure through the summer of 2021. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ Hello and welcome to Episode 1 of my journey across the USA telling the story of the country through sport & adventure. I begin my journey in New York City with three great adventures you can do in one day in the city, for a total cost of $27. New York City can be frantic, and these adventures will fill your day and set you up for a well earned meal in the evening. I started in Central Park for a morning row. It's worth checking the times of the rowing boats on the lake in the park, they can change often, but late morning at the weekends and you should be set. You'll need to take cash with you as that is the only payment they'll except. It's $20 for the boat which can take up to 4 people. You'll also need to take $20 in cash for a deposit - if you go over your one-hour allotted time, money will be deducted from the deposit - so keep an eye on the time! It's a great location to be on the water, even though the lake can get busy, there is plenty of room and to sit back, take in Central Park, the Manhattan skyline and people watch until your heart is content... which you'll find it is after an hour. One note about rowing in Central Park - peaceful yes, relaxing yes, perfect photo opportunity, yes - the only (and it's a small thing) little aspect that gets in the way of your serene surroundings is the noise of the oars! You'll see what I mean in the video. My second adventure of the day was a cycle across Brooklyn Bridge. From Central Park, get the Green 6 Subway towards Downtown to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall from 77th St - which is a couple of blocks east of the park in line with the lake. I downloaded the Citi Bike app which is free and there is a bike station right when you come out of the Subway. Once you have your mode of transport - you have an option of electric and normal bicycles - you are straight onto the cycle lane and footpath that takes you across Brooklyn Bridge. A world of warning, you need to have your wits about you! There are people everywhere at times, and even though the footpath and cycle lane are meant to be separate, inevitably people walk on the cycle lane meaning you'll be weaving in and out of lots of walkers. Watch out for very quick cyclists too who will race up behind you. Never-the-less, it's a great little adventure and once you are at the Brooklyn side, you can check the app to see where the closest bike station is with free spaces. The cost of this little adventure? It all depends on how long you cycle for, but for me it was 50 minutes and a cost of just over $7. Lastly, and this is perfect after the assertions of rowing and cycling, is a gentle late afternoon stroll along the High Line which begins around the new Hudson Yards development in West Manhattan. The High Line is an old disused elevated railway line, it went into disrepair for many years until it was transformed into an inner-city oasis and walking path. This adventure is free, about 1.5 miles long and a superb way to soak up the city as the sun gets lower in the sky. There are plenty of places to sit and just let the world happen in front of you. There are some good bars at the end of the line, which you can't miss should you feel like you deserve a beverage after your day of NYC adventures. ---------------------- Thanks for watching the video, I hope you can enjoy my journey across America as I tell the story of the country through sport & adventure through the summer of 2021. Next episode: Hiking in the Hudson Highlands State Park, 90 minutes north of New York City.

Ryan is an ambassador for the Highlander hiking trails and as he is currently based in the UAE during the pandemic, it seemed only fitting that we experienced some of what will become the UAE's Highlander trail in Ras Al Khaimah. We talked about his love for the Highlander hiking trails, what he thinks of the UAE mountains and some of the most incredible trails he has embarked on. There are also some new hiking trails on the upper Ghaf trail on Jebel Jais. These new walkways mean you no longer have to walk on the road for the short stretch which you used to have to do. These new walkways open up a whole new level of panoramic views to the north, as you will see in this video. Huge thanks to Ryan for his time and I hope you enjoy the video. Thank you for watching. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ------------------------- The Arabian Desert is the world's 5th largest desert, it is home to one of the world's biggest continuous bodies of sand, known as the Empty Quarter. The only way to really appreciate its scale is from the skies, in the peace and tranquility of a hot air balloon. I took a flight with Balloon Adventures Dubai to tell a little bit of the story of the Arabian Desert and to showcase to you the incredible light on the sand dunes as well as a stunning sunrise over the Hajar Mountains. The Hajar Mountains is the biggest mountain range in the eastern Arabian Peninsula - and the mark of the end of the Arabian Desert to the east. If you would like to experience what is showcased in the video, head to Balloon Adventures Dubai: https://www.ballooning.ae/hot-air-balloon-ride/ It is an early start, around a 4.30am pick up from the city of Dubai before an hour's drive into the desert. Once arrived at the take off point, the balloon will be filled with 350,000 cubic feet of hot air and you will climb aboard after a safety briefing. You'll effortlessly leave the ground and begin climbing to around 4,000 feet where you will witness spectacular views of the Arabian Desert, Hajar Mountains and if you are lucky, on a clear day, even back to the city of Dubai. The Arabian Desert is home to such rich stories, and as I talk about in the video, it is also sometimes a lush and fertile landscape when the Indian Ocean monsoons move further north. Don't worry, you won't get caught in these, it only happens roughly every 23,000 years. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ------------------------- When looking for adventures to do in the UAE, exploring Mleiha should be on your list. It's a common myth that the UAE is where you come for luxury holidays surrounded by chilled swimming pools and 5* amenities. Whilst there of course is that element to the country's offerings, there are also areas that provide fascinating glimpses back in time to the very first adventures that modern humans took. One of the those areas is Mleiha in the Emirate of Sharjah. Here, findings have been found that prove anatomically modern human beings settled in the area when they started to populate the world from Africa 130,000 years ago. One of the most prominent areas where these findings have been found is the Valley of Caves. The valley, made up of former coral reef is home to a number of caves where human bones and tools have been discovered. The tools found are on show at the Mleiha Archeological Centre. It is easy to see why this area would have made a comfortable home. With the surrounding flat ground once a lake and the shelter within the caves, human beings had everything they needed at close hand. The history on show goes even further back than human settlement thanks to the coral reef rock formation. This dates back 80 million years to when this now desert landscape was once infact the seabed. The walk through the Valley of the Caves is not a hike, more of a walk which you could cover within an hour. My tip, book a guide from the Mleiha Archeological Centre so you don't miss out on any of the stories on offer. https://www.discovermleiha.ae/ After your exploration of the valley, head back to the centre for refreshments and a look around the museum to learn more about the area you have just walked. Important tips about the Valley of the Caves: Stick to the marked tracks when walking through the Valley of the Caves so not to damage the once coral reef. Much more to discover at Mleiha with archeological sites, treks and adventure packages available. One hour drive from Dubai. Make sure on all outdoor activities you take enough water, sun protection and snacks. - when on guided tours with Mleiha, refreshments are provided. Thanks for watching!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ------------------------- Much attention is given to the upper trails of Jebel Jais, after all the upper Ghaf trail leads you to the UAE's highest public point. Don't let that however, stop you from exploring the lower trails too. For this hike, I was joined by Laura, who manages the hike_uae Instagram page, which is a brilliant resource for hiking in the country. We tackled the Samar trail in the lower trails of the mountain, it is the longest lower trail at 6km and classed as a moderate hike, it is well worth doing! The trail is a clockwise loop, although there is nothing stopping you from going anti-clockwise, but to follow the signs correctly, you'll be travelling in a clockwise direction. The parking and start point of the lower trails are not marked from the main mountain road, unlike the upper trails. When you pass the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp on your right, a few minutes afterwards you will see an area on the left where you can park. Once parked up, walk down to the flat areas, there you will see a few trees located and you will then see the first signpost directing you to the trail you would like to do. The Samar trail is utterly fulfilling. It is mostly an undulating path as you weave up and down through the lower section of Jebel Jais, completely submersed in the mountain terrain. You will find a couple of consistent gradual inclines, which will get the legs working a little, on the way up to a high point resting location and then another little climb to the UAE flag. After that, it's a glorious downhill track back to the car park. The whole hike should take you know more than 4 hours and what's nice is the trees that are dotted around the trail which provide a source of shade. This is a hike to do if you want to feel completely at one with the mountains... you're not so much on top of the mountains, more within them and that in itself brings together the most rewarding of hikes. As always, when you are hiking in the United Arab Emirates remember to take safety seriously. In this video we go through the main safety points, from making sure you are well prepared, know your route, choose a route that suits your experience and to always make sure you have enough water! Thanks for watching and thanks to Laura for joining me to make it a brilliant adventure! Visit www.thesportsexplorer.com for more details.

And now you can, thanks to a section of the lake being opened up to water activities such as kayaking, water bikes and swan boats. Admittedly, once I had booked I had thought the entire lake would be open to kayak around and I was looking forward to exploring every corner of the centrepiece lake of Downtown Dubai. Knowing that it would be a sea-through kayak I'd be using, I had visions of floating over the top of the Dubai Fountain water jets (whilst no fountain shows were happening, obviously) and passing underneath the famous Burj Lake bridge that leads from Dubai Mall across to Souk Al Bahar. However, and I can only admit that my mind perhaps got a little too adventurous as I booked, because in actual fact, you'll be contained in a small area of the lake on the south side. That does make sense of course, the Dubai Fountains begin their shows around midday, so it would be a little dangerous to let people kayak around water jets that shoot water 73 metres in the air! This little mini inner-city adventure however is still a pretty good way to soak up the sights and sounds of Downtown Dubai. You'll get 30 minutes on your activity of choice and in a time of social distancing, getting yourself onto a kayak, floating around and looking up to the incredible array of skyscrapers is a nice calming way of experiencing one of the world's most iconic downtown areas. To book your tickets: https://tickets.atthetop.ae/atthetop/en-us/booktickets/index/18 Prices start at AED40 for the toddler Duck Boats and Flamingo's and kayaking costs AED80 when booking online. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ------------------------- Hello! So, this week may not be the most exhilarating adventure we are going to go on together but Dubai Creek is still an important story to tell. Without it, Dubai probably would not exist as we know it today. The best way to explore Dubai's origins is on foot and I was very keen to share with you the walking loop I love to do around this inlet of water that essentially enabled Dubai to become a thriving fishing and pearl diving port in the 19th century, setting it up to become the global metropolis it is today. I go through some of the Creek's history and the reasons for it being so important in the video but here is a guide to the loop I take so you can follow in my footsteps, or at least use it as a base to your own walking trail. Get a taxi, or park at Dubai Museum. There is parking available at the standard Dubai parking rates. From Dubai Museum, cross the road into the narrow alleys that make up the Bur Dubai souks. If you head in a straight direction from the car park into the souks, you will come out at the water's edge where you will find the creek side cafe, Mazmi. This is a perfect location to sit back with a coffee and watch the hustle and bustle of the Creek take place in front of you. Once you are ready to get moving, head back into the alleys of the souk but head west - after a few twists and turns you will come to the Old Souk Abra Station. From here, you can hop on an Abra for just 1 Dirham and head across the water to the Al Sabkha Abra Station on the Deira side of the Creek. For this Abra journey, you simply just give the Abra captain your 1 Dirham once onboard. From here, you can venture into the Gold Souks or simply wonder up and down the water's edge, taking in the hundreds of Abra's parked up and the cargo vessels that still use the Creek for trade. Once you are ready to return to the south side of the Creek, this time you need to buy a ticket from the ticket office and ask for a one way journey to Al Fahidi. It's a short hop, but for an unknown reason, this leg costs 2 Dirhams. Once you are back on the Bur Dubai side, you can then follow the water's edge back down to the Mazmi cafe where you can finish your loop with another coffee, or head back to Dubai Museum where you can get a taxi or return to your car. My advice, head into Dubai Museum to discover more about Dubai's phenomenal growth. It's a lovely inner-city mini adventure and whilst Dubai is famed for its glitz and glamour, exploring the Creek is a wonderful way to understand just how the city began it's long journey towards becoming a truly global city. Of course, this route is just what I have always enjoyed doing whenever I visit Dubai Creek, but you can go off in different directions wherever you like - the souks can certainly become a maze you may find yourself in for quite some time. Thanks for watching and I hope you find some time to explore Dubai Creek soon.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ------------------------- The Seven Summits trail in the Emirate of Fujairah is a wonderful little day out for keen walkers in the Emirates. Within a 90-minute drive from Dubai, good parking facilities and views of the Hajar Mountains and the Gulf of Oman, this is a great spot for a touch of winter fresh air. The Seven Summits trail is an initiative by the Fujairah Tourism Authority to not only provide a perfect area for some outdoor exercise, but also as a tribute to each of the Emirates in the UAE. The trail begins with a gradual incline on a purpose built path that zig zags up to the first high point - it's not steep and there are seating areas for anyone who wants a rest. At the top, you will reach the first summit and the first fort, which you will find on each of the seven summits you come to. You can enter the forts - they provide a nice little break from the breeze you find on the trail. Whilst the forts are not officially named after each Emirate, they are there to represent the seven Emirates. At night, they are lit thanks to solar powered lights. From the first summit and fort, you will walk east in the direction of the coast along the path that undulates from one summit and fort to the next. In all directions, you will be greeted by some incredible views, especially with the forts lined up in the foreground and the Hajar mountains as the backdrop. For me, timing your trip to the trail at sunset is the best time to visit. As the sun dips below the mountains, the light is exquisite. Once you have come to the seventh and final fort, the track will take you back towards the Flag Park and parking along a path that runs along the bottom of the mountain. The Seven Summits trail is a fabulous destination for a breath of fresh air without needing to really push yourself. It's simple, easy and not time consuming. Likewise, for adventure seekers who love their running, this trail is the perfect location for some terrain jogging as you can do lap after lap around the track. Finally, as the trail won't take up all of you day, you can visit nearby Khor Fakkan to continue your day of exploration where the public beach, Alkhor Kayak, Wadi Shees and Al Rabi Mountain are all located. I'll put the links above. How to get to the Seven Summits trail: From the E611 take the E102 towards Kalba Follow signs for Fujairah and Khor Fakkan at the fork after around 45 minutes As you enter Fujairah City, you will see the Seven Summits trail on your right Go straight at the lights and turn right at the signpost marked 'entrance' Hope you enjoy the video, and thanks for watching!

It is a stunning adventure paradise. Khor Fakkan has something for everyone from hiking, fresh water walks and stunning lake kayaking. I'm actually quite surprised not more people know about Khor Fakkan, or at the very least be aware of the adventures on offer there. It is within a 90-minute drive from Dubai, and as well as the adventures on offer, is home to a gorgeous beach, hotels and a thriving local community. Khor Fakkan is also home to some fascinating stories about the past of the UAE, from the city's former Portuguese rule to a perfect walk exploring the pristine Falaj system that was built over 3000 years ago to supply fresh water to local farms and villages, located at Wadi Shees. In the above video, I give you an insight into the adventure highlights in Khor Fakkan and to read and watch more on each specific adventure, you can click on the links below. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... _______________ Dubai loves its golf! And Topgolf Dubai only reinforces how strong Dubai has become as a golfing destination. I'm by no means a good golfer. But here's the great part - you don't have to be when visiting Topgolf Dubai. It's that simple. It's less about the game, and more about the experience. Think 10-pin bowling and you're on the right track, only with a driving range instead of bowling isles and a club instead of a bowling ball. Okay, so travel is still not a very viable option right now is it? So, best to stay put and seek out the stand out experiences closer to home. Good news then that Topgolf Dubai has opened and is an incredible entertainment destination. And thinking about it, Topgolf Dubai actually provides many aspects that many of you will enjoy on holiday. Great views of a city skyline, a perfect sunset (if you visit from around 5pm), F&B, a sporting activity and a laugh with friends and family. Who needs to fly away? My golf ball certainly wan't that's for sure, it was more trickling slowly away from my many mis-hot shots. Topgolf Dubai is a brilliant and fun driving range, but built with the aim of providing a great social experience instead of hours and hours of perfecting your golf swing. There are 96 climate-controlled hitting bays, each accommodating six people and equipped with your tee-off position, clubs, sofas and a table as well as digital screens to guide you through various different interactive games. Each game involves you aiming for various targets laid out in front of you on the range. Dubai's Topgolf venue is located at Emirates Golf Club and faces the incredible skyline of Dubai Marina meaning not only do you have an impressive venue to enjoy, but also stunning views. You can get a wet, damp, drizzly day in the UK on the driving range out of your head now! Prices are impressively reasonable as well. They start from AED130 per bay for the first hour. After the first hour, you can then top up with extra hours at a lower rate and if you get six people together, that's very good value! Topgolf Dubai price list Prices are per bay for the first hour, you can top up extra hours and will be offered this towards the end of your first hour by an assistant. Sunday-Wednesday 11am-5pm: AED130 5pm-12am: AED180 Thursday 11am-5pm: AED180 5pm-12am: AED220 Friday 9am-5pm: AED180 5am-2am: AED220 Saturday 9am-5pm: AED180 5pm-12am: AED220 Things you should know about Topgolf Dubai: 1. Topgolf Dubai doesn't take bookings for its bays. When you arrive, and due to the popularity, you may find a line before you get yourself set up but don't let that put you off. It's worth it. 2. There are F&B options within the building from The Bunker*, which includes a indoor mini-golf course and a sports bar which is a perfect place to watch the game. 3. To witness a stunning sunset across Dubai Marina just to top off a great time at Topgolf, head down for around 5pm for a couple of hours. Clubs and balls are provided and each bay receives table F&B service. *The Bunker only open at weekends. Thanks for watching!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... _______________ I've been asked a lot recently what the most suitable hike in the UAE for kids is, so I decided it's only right that I showcase what I think works really well for the whole family. Wadi Shawka is a brilliant location, around an hour's drive from Dubai and on the whole is a great starter hike for kids as you can really create the route you want to do using the various different loops. The traditional start to the hike is the climb up the huge Wadi Shawka staircase, which may seem daunting when stood at the bottom. But, there are plenty of rest points for a sit down and once you get this climb done, that is all of the climbing pretty much done - unless you decide to climb to the higher ground further down the track, but this is not necessary. At the top of the staircase, and as I point out in the video, you will find the perfect area to entertain your kids with a game of Twister, or similar party game as a reward for getting to the top of the staircase! Do share your party game/mountain photos with me on Instagram! At the start/end point of this hike there are bathrooms (take some toilet paper as they are often without) and a picnic area with playground and sometimes, some food stalls. You can also decide to start the hike at the end point, which is the track you'll see coming back down to the road opposite where you park the car. Going this way around the loop will mean you will have a slightly more gradual climb up than the staircase and can be equally as fulfilling. It all depends on what you fancy. Whichever route you take, the tracks are well laid out and easy to walk on the whole meaning it really is an exciting day our for children. There aren't any signposts to keep you on track but keep to the pathways and you will be okay - they are pretty easy to navigate. There are also loads of cabanas dotted around which are great for moments in the shade and lunch. As always, don't forget to take plenty of food and snacks, and water and plan your journey so you are not on the mountain when it gets dark. How to get there: 1. Head east on the E102 which can be joined from the E611 2. Turn off at the Shawka junction (some spellings of ‘Shawka' may differ) – about 10 minutes past the junction for Mleiha 3. Drive through the small village of Shawka and turn right at the signpost for ‘Wadi Shawka Dam’. 4. Continue along the tarmac road and park at the ‘Dam Management Office’. From Dubai, journey time is around 60 minutes *No 4x4 needed --------------------- Recommended supplies: 1. Hiking boots although a good pair of trainers with good ankle support would do 2. Suitable clothing depending on season 3. A hat and sun protection 4. Lunch and plenty of water 5. A charged mobile phone – there is a phone signal throughout the hike

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ There is no doubt 2020 has been hugely challenging for everyone around the world. The plans we had going into 2020, exciting things to look forward to, holidays and our normal way of life were all shelved and quickly it became simply, a fight for survival. A fight to remain in a positive state of mind and a fight to take any positive we could find from each day. Because of all the trails and tribulations of 2020, I was determined to end the year on a high note. And to do that, I took part in the first ever Garmin Quest Hatta Adventure Race in the UAE mountain town of Hatta within the Emirate of Dubai. The Garmin Quest Hatta Adventure Race was the first race of its kind in the United Arab Emirates and if this first edition is anything to go by, it will become a must-do annual event in the country. With the Hajar Mountains as the race track there is never a dull moment from start to finish. The Challenger Race, which I competed in consisted of a 7km mountain cycle before a 2.5km run up towards Hatta Kayak. Then it was into a kayak for a 1km sprint on the water before returning to a 2.5km run, downhill this time! With the end in sight, a 6km mountain bike ride and a 500m run completed the race. This was the first long distance race I have ever competed in, as you will know, The Sports Explorer channel is not about me showcasing my athletic abilities (there aren't many), rather a travel platform showcasing destinations through sport & adventure. This epic adventure race in Hatta is a perfect way to explore and a great way for to show you what Hatta is all about. I hope you enjoy the look of the race and will consider taking part next year, and I also hope you are inspired to get into Hatta's Hajar Mountains and explore this wonderful area. Thanks for watching!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ______________ Fossil Rock is a stunning location in the United Arab Emirates and a perfect desert based hike to do in the country. Full of history, and thanks to the marine fossils that populate the rugged terrain this hike is a great way to understand the ancient past of the area. Once the sea bed but now a high point above endless desert dunes, the pure joy of witnessing the sun effortlessly set across the the Arabian Desert is a spectacular reason to make sure this hike is on your to do list. In the above video, you can watch my 5 reasons to hike Fossil Rock. 1. Fossil Rock is within an hour's drive of Dubai. You'll leave Dubai and drive towards Fossil Rock on the Sharjah/Kalba highway which is a perfect way to take in your upcoming hike as it appears on the horizon. Parking is directly underneath Fossil Rock and can be reached on a gravel track. I sometimes park in the nearby village and walk across the sand dunes before making my way up the rock. The parking location pin that I use: https://goo.gl/maps/PhynkgE1Qp79FzCF6 2. Fossil Rock is awash with marina fossils dating back 70 million years. As the name suggests, Fossil Rock is a stunning window into the ancient history of this area of Sharjah when in instead of being a desert, it was the sea bed. Geological and tectonic shifts have meant the once sea bed now rises high above the surrounding desert presenting a unique opportunity to look closely at marine fossils that provide a glimpse into marine life from millions of years ago. 3. The significance of Fossil Rock and the surrounding area Fossil Rock is a part of the Jebel Faya mountain range and it is within the caves in these mountains that artefacts have been found that point to the area being home to the very first anatomically modern humans travelling from Africa into the Arabian Peninsula and subsequently begin to populate the world 125,000+ years ago. Tools found in these caves date back to the Iron and Bronze ages plus the Neolithic and Palaeolithic eras. Whilst no human bones have been found, archeological digs have discovered many objects that date back to these ages and demonstrate a strong community within the Mleiha area.. 4. Mleiha Archeological Centre will provide you with guided hikes of Fossil Rock Mleiha Archeological Centre is is a superb educational and adventure centre that tells the story of the long and important history of the area including providing guided hikes to Fossil Rock. The centre is located not far from Fossil Rock and is home to a cafe perfect for lunch as well as a museum and brilliant displays of the findings from the archeological digs can be found at the Mleiha Archeological Centre. The Mleiha guides are super informed and knowledgable and will be able to talk you through everything you need to know. For more information on about Mleiha Archeological Centre: https://www.discovermleiha.ae/ 5. The sunsets... Being at the top of Fossil Rock, or any vantage point west facing, is a truly special place to witness a desert sunset. With Fossil Rock your seat for the show, the vast Arabian desert laid out in front of you and the sun's diminishing light creating a golden wonderland in front of you, this is not to be missed. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ----------------------- For those who don't live in the United Arab Emirates, and even some people that do live in the country, there is always a surprise when you say there are some amazing locations to go kayaking. Their surprise is understandable, the United Arab Emirates is a country within the world's fifth largest desert so water can be hard to find. But, there are a couple of locations where kayaking is possible away for the coasts and both are superb. Hatta Kayak is one of course, probably the most well known kayaking location in the UAE. The other is Alkhor Kayak - not as high on the public radar, but I can happily tell you, it's is superb. Landscape wise, it is similar to Hatta Kayak, although perhaps home to a little more vegetation on the banks of the lake but what really makes Alkhor Kayak special is its amenities. With parking, a shop, restrooms, an idilic terrace cafe overlooking the lake and kayak rentals at a brilliant AED30 price, it is a kayaking experience that is well worth a trip. Find out more at www.thesportsexplorer.com. Thanks for watching! ------------------------- Extra Tips: 1. Head to Alkhor Kayak at sunset to get the best light and enjoy the sun dipping in the sky whilst relaxing at the terrace cafe. 2. If you are visiting Alkhor Kayak, also head to Wadi Shees as well for the perfect trail. 3. Have a camera at the ready to get those picture perfect kayaking pictures. How to get to Alkhor Kayak: 1. From Dubai head east on the S142, Khor Fakkan Road 2. Follow signs for Khor Fakkan 3. Drive through the various tunnels before reaching a roundabout just before the city of Khor Fakkan 4. Come back on yourself and drive back up the hill from where you have just come 5. Shortly afterwards you will see the Al Rasifa Dam rest point on your right with ample parking Covid-19: Face masks are required in public areas but can be taken off when sitting at the terrace cafe and whilst in your kayak

So what better way to celebrate than showcase a collection of three hikes I love in the UAE. They are as follows... in no particular order!  1. Jebel Jais - This is where you can hike to the highest public point in the UAE, be greeted with amazing views and a very good start and finish location with all the facilities you could wish for. 2. Wadi Shawka - On this hike you don't really reach any sort of summit or end goal, it's just a really good loop with epic views of the Hajar Mountains and a brilliant long staircase to get you going! 3. Al Rabi Tower - This hike I think provides one of the best summit's in the UAE. After a challenging but doable hike to the summit, you are greeted with the stunning setting of looking down on the UAE city of Khor Fakkan and the Gulf of Oman. Do you have a favourite hike in the United Arab Emirates? Comment below and let me know, and happy Take A Hike Day!  Thanks for watching.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ----------------------- Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi is an iconic Formula One circuit, a constant fixture on the F1 calendar but not many iconic sporting venues around the world open their gates for the general public to exercise on twice a week! Some of the Formula One highlights since the inaugural race in 2009, when Jenson Button picked up his first and only World Championship include Kimi Raikkonen's win in his Lotus at the 2012 race, marking his first win in Formula One since returning to the sport at Lotus' first win since 1987; Sebastian Vettel snatching the World Championship from Fernando Alonso in 2010 for his first title and Lewis Hamilton securing his second World Championship in 2014. But whilst there have been many F1 highlights, this is the chance for you to create your own momentous moments on track. For those in the United Arab Emirates, TrainYAS at Yas Marina Circuit is a familiar exercise option. But, for those who aren't aware of it, all those who live elsewhere - this is a superb destination for fitness (and F1) lovers. Every Sunday and Tuesday evening from 6pm through the UAE winter months the track opens up for what is called TrainYAS. People are able to cycle, run or walk around the track, where music is played through the grandstand speakers and the track floodlights shine brightly. The best part is, its all free. All you have to do is register and you'll then receive a barcode. Take that with you to the track, have it scanned and that's it. You can also sent bikes if you don't own one. The link to register is here: https://www.yasmarinacircuit.com/en/healthandfitness/trainyas-detailpage Enjoy the video and thanks for watching! Let me know how you enjoy the experience when you visit! Covid-19: Masks are to be worn in all public areas but can be removed when exercising whilst on track.

This Wadi Shees trail is an amazing oasis in the desert | United Arab Emirates

Read more This Wadi Shees hike in the United Arab Emirates is one of the only areas you are surrounded by flowing fresh water all year round in the country. It's glorious and a walk you need to do. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp... ----------------------- Wow, a hike (well, more of a walk) that is surrounded in flowing fresh water and an endless amount of green vegetation in the United Arab Emirates. Wadi Shees is a rarity in this Gulf country but once you've watched the video you'll want to explore the area, especially if you live in the UAE. The drive to Wadi Shees is easy and hassle free (directions below). From the E611 you'll turn east onto the S142 road. It's the new road that connects Sharjah on the west coast to Khor Fakkan on the east coast. A warning for you - the S142 does not have a petrol station so make sure you are topped up before you set off. The Wadi Shees trail is a special place. For most of the walk you will follow the path of a Falaj system that was built over 3000 years ago and directs fresh rain water that has collected in underground wells in the mountaintops to local communities and farmland. Seeing (and hearing) this fresh water flow is such a refreshing sight (and sound) in a country that only on average gets less than 100mm annually. There are so many reasons to do this walk in the United Arab Emirates, not least to be surrounded by fresh water and vegetation in a otherwise desert country but to see the engineering marvel of the Falaj system is on its own a brilliant experience. I fully recommend a visit. ----------------------- How to get to Wadi Shees: Wadi Shees is available on Google maps From the E611 turn east along the new S142 in Sharjah Drive for about 50 minutes towards Khor Fakkan Once you have passed through the first tunnel turn right to Wadi Shees Drive past Shees Park and downhill to the start point ---------------------- Extra info: Wadi Shees is about an hour's drive from Dubai. There are no bathroom facilities during the walk. There is plenty of shade throughout the walk. You are not allowed to swim in the fresh water reservoir which you pass on the trail. Keep the trail tidy taking any litter with. Simple trainers will be sufficient footwear. ---------------------- Covid-19 advice Face masks should be worn when close to others on the walk.

A perfect way to learn about Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates and enjoy utterly serene surroundings. I went with Noukhada Adventure, based at the Anantara Eastern mangroves Hotel in Abu Dhabi for my kayak tour of the Mangrove Park. My guide Roger was superb and knows the area inside out. It's an incredible way to explore a hugely important area of Abu Dhabi, with the city skyline in the distance, yet you'll be immersed in a far different world. Mangroves are a natural way of reducing carbon-dioxide from the atmosphere, helping minimise the effects of global warming including rising sea levels. They also provide a superb escape from the city of Abu Dhabi for an adventure that will take you to a different world with tight waterways to paddle through,. Watch the video to see why one waterway is nicknamed 'Divorce Channel'! ---------------------- Extra info: Anantara Eastern Mangroves Hotel where Noukhada Adventure (and other kayaking rental companies) are based, is available on Google Maps. All you need to know about Hatta Kayak | Unlimited time on rentals

Read more The Sports Explorer guide to kayaking in the Arabian Desert at Hatta Kayak, including the best tips and Hatta's history... it hasn't always been in the UAE. Read more below: ------------------ HI! I'm Tom Bushell, The Sports Explorer. If you found this video worth your time I would love you to consider clicking the SUBSCRIBE button and follow my journey as I tell the story of the UAE through sport & adventure in a post lockdown world. JEBEL JAIS - HOW TO HIKE TO THE UAE'S HIGHEST PUBLIC POINT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nky5JCl9mIY&t=11s -------------------------- Welcome to Hatta Kayak in the United Arab Emirates. Now, you may well be thinking to yourself, ‘how do you kayak in Hatta? A mountain town which sits in the middle of the world’s fifth largest desert. Asia's biggest desert. I can't imagine there are huge bodies of water to go kayaking in? Unless you’re kayaking on sand, I’m confused.’ I understand your confusion; the words 'desert' and 'kayaking' don’t often appear in the same sentence. But that all changes when you visit Hatta Kayak in the UAE, a town that sits on the border with Oman. Hatta Kayak is a hugely popular tourist destination for UAE residents and tourists alike but if you get there early then you’ll often have the lake to yourself. Hatta Kayak is all possible thanks to the Hatta Dam, which was built in the mid-nineties to generate power for the local Hatta area and the subsequent reservoir now provides a great escape from rolling sand dunes and rocky terrain. Hatta is about 130km away from the city of Dubai and is a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life found in the likes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The town sits in a tiny exclave in the emirate of Dubai that is bordered with Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman and Oman to the south. Hatta actually used to be in neighbouring Oman, but the sultan of Oman at the time, Turki bin Said transferred the territory to Dubai around 1850 when the Omanis realised they could not protect it from Buraimi tribes who had settled near by. Since it’s been within UAE territory, it has become a popular destination for Dubai residents during the summer months for its slightly cooler temperatures as it sits around 1000m above sea level. Once a sleepy mountain town, with only one hotel – the Jebel Fort Hotel, it is now an adventure playground with endless activities to enjoy amongst stunning natural scenery, history and discoveries. UAE residents and tourists now flock to Hatta to enjoy a thrill-seeking adventure. Not only is Hatta Kayak a must-do, but mountain biking, as I tried out recently - check the link at the top of this description - but also hiking and even zorbing are all available to do at Wadi Hub. To kayak in Hatta, it’s very simple. You’ll park underneath the Hatta Dam in a car park that is large and has toilet facilities – don’t worry, there is no chance of an overflow and the car park being washed away. You’ll then walk up a long roadside staircase to reach the water level and on your right you’ll find the Hatta Kayak kiosk. You can pay by cash or card. You can rent kayak’s for just AED 60 and your time of the kayak will be unlimited. Once you have paid for you kayak, or the other water activates available you’ll walk down the ramp towards the pontoon. Here you’ll be given lifejackets and there are some lockers to take advantage of too. The lake is around 30m deep at its deepest and 1.5km long. The Hatta Dam will be on the left as you set off but there are loads of areas to venture off to and the surrounding mountains cascade down to the water’s edge meaning you can get right up close to the base of the mountains. For the best weather, go in the cooler winter months. You are not allowed to get out of the kayak to swim in the reservoir so in the summer, it could prove to be a little frustrating. How to get to Hatta Kayak: Take the E44 out of Dubai towards Hatta. Turn onto the E611 heading towards Sharjah. Turn onto the E102 heading towards Kalba/Eastern Region Turn right towards Hatta at the junction after the Swawka junction. This road is currently being constructed so doesn’t have a name yet (but it is open) and expect some delays if you get stuck behind a slow truck. At the roundabout turn back onto the E44 and follow signs towards Hatta. At the main Hatta roundabout take the first exit. At the roundabout take the first exit. Turn left at the next roundabout next to the Emirates NBD branch. After the Hatta Grand Mosque turn right. At the top of the road turn left. Mountain biking the Hajar Mountains at Hatta's Wadi Hub, United Arab Emirates

Read more The Sports Explorer guide to an mountain biking through the Hajar Mountains with tips, routes and Hatta's 'Hollywood' sign! Read more below: ------------------- HI! I'm Tom Bushell, The Sports Explorer. Just over an hour’s drive from Dubai, it’s a thrill seeking little mountain town. It’s a world away from the bright lights of city life and the perfect destination to get outdoors and get some fresh air in the lungs. On this adventure, I decided to rent a mountain bike to explore some of the 52km’s of cycle trails that have been perfectly laid out around Hatta’s Hajar mountain range. Rental of a bike is easy. You don’t need to book and prices range from AED65 – AED85 per hour depending on which size of bike you hire. If you have your own bike then you are free to take to the trails for free. You’ll start at Wadi Hub, which is located on the E44 once you have passed through Hatta itself. The turn off is shortly after the main roundabout in Hatta. Here you’ll find a heap of activities to enjoy from plunge pools and slides, rope parks, axe-throwing, zorbing and more. From October 1st, all activities will re-open at Hatta's Wadi Hub. At the moment it is only the cycle and hiking trails that are available. There are showers and toilets available and the café is open for refreshments. Wadi Hub opens at 6am daily. The Bike Shop, which is easy to spot once you have parked, is where you’ll rent your bike. The staff are great and will help you out, explain the routes for you and get you on your way. When renting a bike, you’ll also be given a helmet. You’ll have a range of trails to choose from, from the most difficult black trails to the easiest green routes. Make sure you have plenty of water in your backpack, and some food if you are going for a longer ride. You can pick up a phone signal all across the trails too so make sure your phone is charged incase you need to call for assistance. The trails themselves are really exciting. You’ll have different terrains, cross bridges, go through water, take in spectacular views and have plenty of uphill and downhill sections. On the green route I did (Green 3) – there aren’t too many big climbs, but some nice short uphill parts. This route would actually be perfect to take the kids with you if you’re looking for a family day out. All the trails are one-way so whichever trail you choose, make sure you follow them all the way around in the correct direction. If you turn back on yourself you will risk colliding with another cyclist following the trail. You’ll find a brilliant example of a ‘Wadi’ cycling from Wadi Hub. The word means a dried up river bed, and considering Hatta only gets on average around 4 ½ inches of rain per year, wadi’s are pretty common. Depending on the trail you take, you’ll also get some good views of Hatta’s equivalent of the Hollywood sign. You can see this from the car on your way to Wadi Hub so don’t be disappointed if you can’t spot it on your bike. Cycling is a big sport in the UAE but it is road cycling that gets most of the attention. In the city of Dubai, purpose built cycling paths are dotted all over the place but for a real sense of adventure and to get exploring, the mountain town of Hatta is a perfect destination for a few hours on two wheels. ----------------------- How to get there: 1. Take the E44 out of Dubai towards Hatta. 2. Turn onto the E611 heading towards Sharjah. 3. Turn onto the E102 heading towards Kalba/Eastern Region 4. Turn right towards Hatta at the junction after the Swawka junction. This road is currently being constructed so doesn’t have a name yet (but it is open) and expect some delays if you get stuck behind a slow truck. 5. Turn back onto the E44 and follow through Hatta. +You can no longer drive the E44 all the way through from Dubai as the Oman stretch is now restricted to cargo traffic. --------------------- Recommended Supplies: 1. Take plenty of water, especially if you cycling in the hotter summer months 2. Take snacks if you are going on a longer trail 3. A fully charged phone 4. Sports shorts and t-shirts will be best ------------------- The Sports Explorer on social media: https://www.thesportsexplorer.com/ https://www.instagram.com/thesportsexplorer/ https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExplorer

Hiking the Middle East's Rocky Mountains at Wadi Shawka, UAE

Read more HOW MANY STEPS!? The Sports Explorer guide to all you need to know to hike the Middle East's Rocky Mountains at Wadi Shawka, only an hour's drive from Dubai. Read more below: ------------------- HI! I'm Tom Bushell, The Sports Explorer. If you found this video worth your time I would love you to consider clicking the SUBSCRIBE button and follow my journey as I tell the story of our world through sport & adventure. Other The Sports Explorer videos you may like: HOW TO EXPLORE HATTA WHILST MOUNTAIN BIKING, UAE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQunyd7c1LE&t=5s HOW TO HIKE TO THE UAE'S HIGHEST PUBLIC POINT AT JEBEL JAIS, UAE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nky5JCl9mIY&t=34s -------------------- I loved this hike in the United Arab Emirates. It is a spectacular way to see the Middle East's 'Rocky Mountains'. It's perfect for all forms of fitness, accessible and full of adventure. The Wadi Shawka trail in Ras Al Khaimah is only a 60-minute drive from Dubai, but a world away in terms of scenery, landscape and sounds and the perfect location for exploring. Yes, the UAE does offer more than just the 5* luxury that Dubai is often known for. You'll know that if you have subscribed to The Sports Explorer! The hike begins with a stroll around the lake formed by the Wadi Shawka dam. At the far side of the lake, you’ll reach the base of the staircase that leads you up to the upper levels of the hike. The staircase includes resting points where you can sit down – if you tackle the trek early in the morning, the initial staircase climb is mostly in the shade, but set off later in the day and you’ll struggle to find any rest bite from the sun. Stunning views of the Middle East’s Rocky Mountains Once you arrive at the top, you will follow a path along the top edge. Ahead of you and to the right you will be welcomed by spectacular views of the Al Hajar Mountain Range. The Al Hajar Mountain range spreads right across Oman and the north eastern areas of the United Arab Emirates and is the highest mountain range in the Middle East’s eastern peninsular. ‘Al Hajar’ translates to ‘rocky’, lending itself to the nickname, the ‘Middle East’s Rocky Mountains’. It’s easy to see why the mountain range is named Al Hajar. The terrain is mostly made up of gravel, boulders and rocks. You won’t need to climb over many big boulders on this route however with the tracks easily laid out. Scramble downhill You’ll find the path becomes a little difficult to keep track of for a short stage. A little scramble downhill is required to reach the other tracks that wind their way trough the mountains. Don’t be concerned though, with just a little care you’ll find this little stretch is easy for any fitness level. Once you have scrambled down to the more obvious tracks, you’ll have a choice as to which direction to go. No matter which route you take, as they are loops, you’ll find that they all bring you back to the same place. I headed left, which led me back to the starting point where you park your car. Rest up at multiple cabanas and take in the quietness Cabanas are situated on all paths providing a perfect resting place, shade and a good location for eating, taking in the view and swallowing up the peacefulness. If you’re coming from Dubai or another urban hub within the UAE, the quietness is something to fully appreciate. You’ll feel a world away from the 5* hotels, busy highways and bustling shopping malls. The final stretch back down to the road is easy to follow, but can be quite steep in parts, so again, care is needed. Once you have reached the bottom you’ll find the parking where you parked on arrival. If you've got a day free, I would highly recommend tackling this hike for a great view of one of the Middle East's most impressive mountain ranges. ----------------- How to get there: 1. A charged mobile phone – there is a phone signal throughout the hike -------------------- The Sports Explorer on Social Media: https://www.thesportsexplorer.com/ https://www.instagram.com/thesportsexplorer/ https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExplorer

The history of Dubai's Palm Jumeirah island whilst kayaking, United Arab Emirates

Read more The Sports Explorer guide to kayaking Dubai's Palm Jumeirah, what is known as the 'eighth wonder of the world'. Read more below: ------------------ HI! I'm Tom Bushell, The Sports Explorer. If you found this video worth your time I would love you to consider clicking the SUBSCRIBE button and follow my journey as I tell the story of our world through sport & adventure. Other The Sports Explorer videos you may like: HOW TO EXPLORE HATTA WHILST MOUNTAIN BIKING, UAE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQunyd7c1LE&t=5s HOW TO HIKE TO THE UAE'S HIGHEST PUBLIC POINT AT JEBEL JAIS, UAE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nky5JCl9mIY&t=34s -------------------- If you’re looking for a well-priced water activity to do in Dubai, renting out a kayak to explore Palm Jumeirah is up there as one of the best. The Sports Explorer guides you through how to do it in the above video. Palm Jumeirah, which is commonly referred to as the ‘eighth wonder of world’ is an engineering marvel and known the world over. And let’s not be in doubt that an aerial view of this mammoth construction is impressive, but exploring it on the water is just as rewarding. If you’re staying in a beach resort hotel, the rental of watersports equipment can be expensive, but head to the independent ‘Monty’s Rowing and Paddle Sports Club’ located at the Club Vista Mare beach on Palm Jumeriah and you can rent out a kayak for as little as 60AED – much better value! You’ll get an hour and be able to explore the many fronds, many of which are littered in luxury villas and residences, you’ll be able to look back at the incredible skyline of Dubai Marina, or just sit back and enjoy being out on the water in the middle of one of the most famous islands in the world. There are multiple single and double kayaks to rent out, and you don’t need to book. Just turn up and after payment (in cash) you’ll be on your way. If kayaking isn’t your thing, there are also paddleboards and giant water tricycles available. Palm Jumeirah is incredible and in many ways put Dubai on the global map. The opening of Atlantis – The Palm Hotel in 2008 is often seen as the opening of the island and it is now home to over 10,000 residents and multiple 5* star luxury resorts. Clearly visible from space (not sure if you will be on a kayak) and one of Dubai’s most successful projects, it is well worth exploring. Even though you’ll be kayaking surrounded by land, you still have a real sense of sea kayaking as the island cleverly allows the ocean tidal flow into its inlets. All in all, this is sea kayaking surrounded by luxury and stunning views. For me, head out in the morning or early evening to experience the brilliant sunrise or sunsets that Dubai has to offer. --------------------- Location: Monty’s Rowing and Paddle Sports Club, Club Vista Mare, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai ------------------------ Extra info: 1. Life jackets are available as part of your rental. 2. Club Vista Mare also has shower facilities. 3. See if you can spot the fake palm trees that are actually mobile phone antennas. ---------------------- The Sports Explorer on social media: https://www.thesportsexplorer.com/ https://www.instagram.com/thesportsexplorer/ https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExplorer

Cycling past the Burj Khalifa and Hollywood movie locations at Nad Al Sheba, United Arab Emirates

Read more The Sports Explorer guide on how to cycle at the Nad Al Sheba Cycle Loop in Dubai. Can you spot the famous Hollywood movie locations? Read more below: -------------------- HI! I'm Tom Bushell, The Sports Explorer. If you found this video worth your time I would love you to consider clicking the SUBSCRIBE button and follow my journey as I tell the story of our world through sport & adventure. Other The Sports Explorer videos you may like: HOW TO EXPLORE HATTA WHILST MOUNTAIN BIKING, UAE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQunyd7c1LE&t=185s HOW TO HIKE TO THE UAE'S HIGHEST PUBLIC POINT AT JEBEL JAIS, UAE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nky5JCl9mIY&t=33s ------------------------- Cycling in Dubai has always been popular, but now that UAE Team Emirates have taken victory in the prestigious Tour de France, the sport could be about to reach fever pitch. If you are a regular rider, just getting started or want to ride more, cycling at the Nad Al Sheba Cycle Loop in Dubai is where you want to go, in my opinion. In the shadows of the Burj Khalifa, and the skyline of Downtown Dubai in view for pretty much the entire loop you may well find yourself able to push yourself just a little harder. The Nad Al Sheba Cycle Loop is an inspiring location. Before we get into the nitty gritty of how exactly you cycle the Nad Al Sheba Cycle Loop, it would be remiss of me not to whole-heartedly congratulate UAE Team Emirates on their Tour de France victory this week. Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar is the rider to have achieved the feet, becoming the second youngest Tour de France champion in history at the age of 21. I suspect you’ll be seeing a lot of him around Dubai in the coming weeks. His image has already been lit up on the Burj Khalifa, and rightly so. The Nad Al Sheba Cycle Loop is a converted camel track. It consists of three loops of varying distances from 4km to 8km and has everything you need for a brilliant ride. The main loop weaves through some areas of the Meydan One construction site, but the stunning vistas towards Downtown Dubai will be all you need to take your mind away from construction in the foreground. It’s not construction all the way around however, most areas of the track are landscaped with trees, hedges, lawns and nicely appointed rest points with benches to be found at various intervals so you can take a breather. For the most part the track is flat, with just a couple of underpasses to go through with a small decline and incline and the track itself is mostly smooth with just a few areas where you’ll want to keep both hands on the handlebars! There are well marked out signs with emergency contact numbers on them all the way around the route which is reassuring incase you have an accident. For those early risers who want to set off before sunrise, or if you fancy an evening cycle when the sun has gone you are in luck. The loop is well floodlit and with lights on your bike, you’ll be good to go. Facilities wise, you’ve got everything you need. A good sized car park, a café, bike hire, changing facilities and the perfect location for the start and end of your cycle. You can find full directions below. For some extra motivation, as you start to become a little out of breath, all you’ll need to do is look up at the Burj Khalifa, the main focus within the 2011 Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol movie starting Tom Cruise and remember a cycle is nothing compared to what Cruise did on the side of the tower! And even though the Burj Khalifa is a bit of an obvious Hollywood movie shout out, don’t forget the Meydan bridge that you’ll also pass on the loop. The bridge is another feature in the Mission Impossible film. It was the location used for the end of the car chase when the sandstorm clears. My tip, set off on a sunrise cycle, there is no better sight than seeing the sunlight catch the tower and work its way up as the sun rises. Extra Tips: For bike rental call: 050 240-6660 Make sure your bike is in good working order before setting off Take bottled water with you There isn’t much shade to be found on the track Always keep to the right so that people can overtake on the left How to get to the Nad Al Sheba Cycle Loop: From the E44 turn onto Meydan Road/D69 heading east. At the roundabout take the second exit continuing on Meydan Rod/D69. At the next roundabout take the first exit, it will be signposted ‘private access’ but continue. At the next roundabout come back on yourself . Take the first right at the signpost marked ‘cycle parking’. Covid-19 : Face masks must be worn in all public areas. Once you are cycling face masks can be removed whilst exercising. ---------------------- The Sports Explorer on social media: https://www.thesportsexplorer.com/ https://www.instagram.com/thesportsex... https://www.facebook.com/TheSportsExp...
