I started my journey from Glasgow Queen Street, at this is the only main terminus direct trains depart from. There are 3 trains a day. The summit sits at a height of 4,411 feet and is not only the highest point in the United Kingdom, but also until you reach Norway. Thankfully, it is a fairly straightforward climb, with it's well laid out mountain path guiding hikers to the summit. You will start at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre, where there is a gift shop and snacks and drinks to be bought. The Visitor Centre is a short taxi ride from Fort William. Once you are on the mountain trail, you'll head uphill in a southbound direction climbing out of the Glen. The path on this stretch is the steepest you will encounter. After around 2 hours, you will reach Lochen Meall, known as 'halfway lake', it is here the path offers it's only moment of flat walking so enjoy it! For the next phase, you will hike away from Lochen Meall and continue upwards before entering a switchback section. Whilst this is not the steepest section, it is tough going, especially in winter conditions. Finally, you will make a left turn and follow the path (and cairns) all the way to the summit - don't stray form the path as the summit is surrounded by deep gorges that would be deadly if you were to fall. As you pass the old Observatory and the emergency shelter, you will see the summit a few feet away. If you are to hike Ben Nevis in the winter, make sure you take plenty of supplies, and wear the correct clothing. The proper layers, water, a hot drink and food are all required. And whilst you may not need hiking polls going up the mountain, they are a great help coming down. Thank you for watching this latest video. For over 30 year's she has stood at the finish line congratulating runners as they finish. At 91 years of age, she is still as passionate as ever about the event and today, November 7th will be at the finish line for yet another New York Marathon greeting the thousands who cross the line, even more excited after the cancelation of 2020's event. 2021 marks the 50th running of the New York Marathon, an event which is known to be the world's most famous Marathon and the characters involved deserve to be celebrated. None more so than Barbara, who's love for New York, the Marathon and the people who compete is long standing. YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE TO HIKING THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL APPROACH ROUTES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZfm6... ______________ South Lake Tahoe is no doubt a wonderful hiking location, but the Van Sickle Trail has one great advantage, it is within walking distance of the Heavinly Village so therefore most likely within easy reach of your hotel. It is a moderate hike, that weaves through alpine forests, offers plenty of stunning vista areas and includes a waterfall in which many make the half-way point before walking back down the mountain. The start point is behind the Raley's store in the Heavinly Village shopping complex. There are plenty of coffee shops that provide a good source of caffeine before you get going. You'll find the start as you enter the Van Sickle State Park, you'll then walk up a service road underneath the Gondola before you reach an information point which has pocket maps, restrooms and information about the area. Head left continuing up the road before you reach the official trailhead, again marked with a map. It is here you'll turn onto the trail properly and then follow the orabge markings. You'll walk through the alpine forest and eventually come to a VIsta sign which marks a route up some boulders. It is well worth taking this to reach a high point where you get the most stunning of views across Lake Tahoe. Once you decide to carry on, you'll keep following the orange markings, also marking the Lake Tahoe Rim Trail before you begin to come out of the alpine forest and then climb the mountain on a well maintained switchback trail. You'll get to the small waterfall when you reach the bridge. This is a perfect location for lunch and to cool the feet off with a little dip in the water. Here you can either carry on another 3.5 miles to reach the Rim Trail or use this as your turnaround point and head back down the trail the same way you came up. The Van Sickle Trail is a great one day adventure whilst in South Lake Tahoe. The whole hike shouldn't take you more than 3 hours, but don't forget to take your time to soak up the views. You could also combine the trail with a trip up the mountain on the less active, but no less spectacular Gondola ride. Thanks for watching the video. The trail begins at the Eagle Point campground and stretches all the way around to Rubicon Point, 13 miles away. As it is a turnaround trail however, you can switch back on yourself whenever you feel like. In the above video I guide you on hiking to the beach area, where the Vikingsholm estate is located, take a kayak on the water to Fannette Island and also hike the short route to the Lower Eagle Falls. The Rubicon Trail to the beach is easy-moderate. You'll start with a downward stretch all the way to the bridge area, with Lake Tahoe on your right. On a clear day, you'll experience the most amazing views and landscapes from the mountains to the lake itself. There a few seating areas on the trail where you can stop and soak it all up. You'll eventually cross the bridge that crosses the Lower Eagle Falls ridge, where you'll turn right towards the beach. Here you will find the Vikingsholm estate and visitor centre. You'll be able to read about the history of Vikingsholm, and its founder, Lora Knight who built the area up to be an outdoor adventurers playground. You can also get a tour of the mansion. It is also from the beach area where you can rent a kayak. You'll pay $35 for an hour, which is enough time to kayak over to Fannette Island and back. Once at the island, you'll also have time to stop for lunch, or take a hike around the island. As you return towards the start point at Eagle Campground, you can take a right as you get to the Lower Eagle Falls bridge and head up the short path to the Lower Eagle Falls. The best time to see the falls in full flow is in Spring when the winter ice melts, but it is still worth a visit at any time of the year. You'll then walk back down to the bridge before you begin the return leg, uphill on the Rubicon Trail back to the start point. There is a car park at the start point, but it does get busy so you might might like to consider getting a taxi to the start point. Once you complete your hike, you can walk through the campground to the welcome hut where you can use their wi-fi to order a ride home. And when you arrive into this amazing city, you are never far away from its music culture and heritage. However, the Music City is also a thriving city for sport and adventure. From a sporting perspective, there are major franchises such as the Tennessee Titans, Nashville Predators and Nashville SC to enjoy whilst the Nashville Sounds represent the city within Minor League Baseball. And in August 2021 the city welcomed a new sporting aspect to its streets, as IndyCar raced around the city for the first time in the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix. I visited the city to soak up the event, speak to fans about their love of the IndyCar series and their delight that they can now watch the series in their own backyard. And with the success of the event, there is no doubting that the sound of motorsport is a welcome new sound to the Music City. The event has been described as the beginnings of a new iconic IndyCar event, and has the potential to reach the heights of other famous street circuits around the world. With a city like Nashville, withy its rich culture, atmosphere and party spirit, motorsport fits ever so well - and offers sport fans a brilliant experience each year. A day of race action before a walk into the thriving Broadway area is what many fans had in mind. The race weekend consisted of three days of track action with IndyCar being the star showing but other categories of racing also entertained fans around the circuit that took in the streets around around the Nissan Stadium, the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge and the Rolling Mill Hill area of Downtown. By all accounts, Nashville can now say that horsepower is well and truly a new sound of the Music City. Thanks for watching the video as I explore the world through sport & adventure. It was an account of his attempt to hike the entire length of the world's longest hiking route, the spectacular Appalachian Trail. Sadly, without 7/8 months up my sleeve, I had to embark on a slightly shorter adventure. What I did have time for however - and I made sure a visit was part of my cross-America series - was to experience the beginnings of the AT, pass through its arch that marks the start of the Approach Trail and explore the hiking routes within the area of the Southern Terminus in Georgia. All the hiking routes that lead to the AT for real begin at The Amicalola State Park visitor centre, here you'll be able to pick up maps, refreshments, and if you haven't done so already, book a night at the Len Foote Hike Inn... as the lodge has an office behind the visitor centre. Below is my step-by-step guide to a great weekend hiking adventure that takes in the Amicalola Falls, the Hike Inn Trail and a night's stay at the Hike Inn plus a southbound hike on the AT Approach Trail. - At the Amicalola State Park visitor Centre, you can book your night's stay at the Hike Inn, or book online here (XXXXXX). As I mention in the video, if you are hiking during the summer months you can get a room at half price at just $75. - Once you have your night's stay at the Hike Inn booked, you actually need to drive up the mountain to the Top of the Falls car park which is where the Hike Inn and Approach Trails officially begin. You can leave your car here overnight. You'll be given a parking pass once you have booked your Hike Inn stay. - If however you want to begin your hike at the famous AT arch, which sits behind the visitor centre, you can walk down the falls, and then begin officially from the arch. - You'll turn left as soon as you pass under the arch, following the West Ridge Staircase trail (blue) to the Top of the Falls. It's a great warm up to your weekend of hiking as you climb the 600 steps to reach the top of the Amicalola Falls, with the views getting even more impressive the further you climb. - Once you reach the top, you'll be back at the car park where you have parked and from here you'll take the path which is well signposted at the back of the car park for the AT Approach and the Hike Inn trail. - The two trails begin together, so you'll see blue (AT Approach) markings and green (Hike Inn trail markings) as you begin. - Soon after you begin, the Hike Inn trail will head off to the right whilst the AT Approach continues straight forward. Head right on the Hike Inn trail and it's 4.8 miles to your night of comfort. - The trail is not technically difficult, but does see you climb around 600/700 feet in elevation. There are moments where the humidity if you're hiking in the summer will sap your energy, but taking a mile at a time makes things manageable. - Once at the Hike Inn, dinner and breakfast will be provided with your booking. Showers, brilliant vista seating areas and comfortable bunk bed rooms also make it a remote, isolated oasis. The rooms do not have power outlets, but there is a shared solar powered charging point for any devices you need to plug in. - Once you have enjoyed your night's stay, you can either hike back down the way you came up, or head right from the front door of the Hike Inn and continue on the green Hike Inn trail for a mile. - You'll then reach the t-junction where you can either turn right and continue to Springer Mountain, the official start point of the AT, or turn left to hike southbound on the Approach Trail where after around 6 miles you'll reach the Top of the Falls car park to complete your adventure. Here's my guide to kayaking along the Potomac River in Washington D.C., including prices, locations, tips on routes and the sights you get to see from the water! ------------------- HI! The adventure begins at the Key Bridge Boathouse in Georgetown on the northern shore of the Potomac. You can rent kayaks here for $20 per hour, although I highly suggest two hours so you're not rushing whilst on the water. You'll need to pre-book your kayak online here: https://boatingindc.com/boathouses/key-bridge-boathouse/ Once you have arrived at Key Bridge Boathouse, registered, picked up your lifejacket and boarded your kayak you are able to travel north or south. For me, going south is the best option, it is in this direction you'll come across some of Washington D.C.'s best sights. You'll start by paddling underneath the bridge, then soon pass the bustling riverside restaurant and bar area of Georgetown once you have passed the Georgetown Waterfront Park on your left. Next to witness is The Watergate buildings and then the John F. Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts. A little further down the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial come into view, two of the city's most spectacular landmarks. And from the water, you get a perfect view of the two structures without any obstacles in the way, other than the glorious Potomac stretching out in front of you. After this point, you'll loop back around the Theodore Roosevelt Island, which will be on your right as you head north with Virginia on your left. You can hike on the island with numerous trails to be explored. Once you have travelled north up the channel, you will soon be approaching the Key Bridge and back within reach of the Boathouse. Kayaking along the Potomac is a wonderful way to explore Washington D.C., you are away from the hustle and bustle of the key tourist hotspots, and the Potomac is a great river to explore in itself. My best tip would be to head out in the late afternoon sunshine, you'll be sharing the water with rowers, paddle boarders and small leisure boats, the with the width of the Potomac there is plenty of room. Once you are back on dry land and as you come out of the Boathouse, turn right and you'll find The Berliner, a brilliant spot for a refreshing drink post kayak. If you then walk back down the river through the park, you'll find numerous restaurants and bars to enjoy on he water's edge Thanks for watching. D.C. United, the city's MLS team - and one of the founding members of the league back in 1996 - is one of the city's best sporting attractions. The team, who have won the MLS Cup four times play their home games at Audi Field, a 20,000 capacity stadium in the south of the city. Having relocated from the RFK Stadium, this area of Washington is now seeing speedy gentrification with new apartment buildings, restaurants and bars all being built around the stadium. It takes around 20 minutes on the bus or metro from Downtown to reach Audi Field. One of the best ways to attend a D.C. United game is to join in the festivities with the Screaming Eagles Supporter's Group. Having had a thriving tailgate culture in the many parking lots around RFK Stadium, they haven't been put off by the lack of free space at the team's new home. They now gather before a game at the Mathew Henson Earth Conversation Centre, around a 5-minute walk south of Audi Field. If you are visiting the city and love watching a live football game, then it's a must to visit the Screaming Eagles before the game where you will be welcomed into the party, offered drinks (which are very cheap compared to inside the stadium) and meet some great people who are passionate about football. You can also continue your time with the most passionate of D.C. United fans during the game too if you have secured a ticket within the North Stand. In this stand is a mix of standing and seated tickets, and it is by far the best stand to experience the best of the atmosphere within the ground. I loved my visit, and I was keen to show how sporting teams in Washington D.C. are able to bring a city together which is often thought as as being divided. The Screaming Eagles' motto is 'All Welcome, All United" which is certainly what I found when I enjoyed the team's biggest game of the season against the New York Red Bulls alongside my new Screaming Eagles friends. Whilst down the road at the Capitol Building, or the White House, where there might be fierce rivalries in play, heated debates and a constant disagreement on many views, just a few minutes down the road there is a sporting club that brings everyone together. D.C. United may have taken the word 'United' from the traditional English use of it in its football clubs, but in actual fact, their aren't many other clubs in the world where 'United' is more fitting. If you are a football fan, and visiting Washington D.C. then I highly recommend getting ticket for a D.C. United game... and say hi to the Screaming Eagles whilst you're at it. Much like the incredible Hudson Highlands 90 minutes from New York City on the train, Washington D.C. also has great access to brilliant adventures. Rock Creek Park is no exception. The park is enormous and sits north of the Downtown area of the city. It is infact America's 3rd established National Park back at the end of the 19th Century and now it is a paradise for hikers, cyclists, joggers and picnic lovers! Please see below to follow how I hiked from top to bottom of Rock Creek Park, a duration on 7 miles but all fairly flat with some undulation along the way. - Take a bus from Downtown to Silver Spring - it will cost you $2. - At Silver Spring bus station, change onto the Number 1 bus towards Friendship Heights and get off at Grubb Road. It'll take just a few minutes. - Stock up on supplies such as water at Rock Creek Shopping Centre and grab breakfast at the iconic Parkway Deli. - Head south on the road for a few minutes then turn right onto the Boundary Trail. - You'll soon come to a junction with the Valley Trail. Here you need to turn left. - When you arrive at the T-Junction, keep to the right and keep Rock Creek on your right hand side. - Walk underneath the small road bridge, then over a foot bridge. - You can turn off the main trail to the right to find a nice pebble beach area for a resting stop. - Carry on south on Valley Trail until you come to Picnic Grove 6. Here there are restrooms, picnic benches and plenty of areas to relax. This is about the half-way mark. - Track back to where Picnic Grove 6 opens up and step down to where the ld Milk House Ford used to be. - Here, you can either cross the river along the rocks, or use the bridge close by. - Head west on the yellow marked trail and follow it around to the left. - Eventually you will come to the former sight of Fort DeRussy - an old Civil War fort that served to protect the city of Washington. - Carry on back down the path until you get back to the flowing Rock Creek. - Cross the bridge back over the water and then turn right to rejoin the Valley Trail. - Continue south past the likes of Rapids Bridge and Boulder Bridge. - Boulder Bridge is another nice spot for a rest. - As you then pass Pulpit Rock, you will turn right onto the Roosevelt Trail which links you to the Western Ridge Trail. - From here, head south again for a few minutes until you reach Peirce Mill where you can call it a day. - From Peirce Mill, you can either get a ride sharing lift or walk to nearby Cleveland Park along Tilden Street then south on Connecticut Avenue where you will find shops, restaurants and bars for a well deserved pot hike refreshment. From Cleveland Park you can also take the bus back to Downtown. I loved this first adventure in Washington D.C. - a perfect start to exploring the city through sport & adventure. In New York? You go to the Yankees. In London, a day at Wimbledon? You get the drift... but sometimes if you look under the radar a little you find some amazing sporting events to attend. That is certainly the case in Altoona, a small town in central Pennsylvania and home to two famous destinations.  The first is the Horseshoe Curve - the engineering marvel on the Pennsylvania railroad where the tracks complete a full u-turn reducing the incline as the line climbs the Allegheny mountains.  Secondly, Altoona Curve - the baseball team that represents countless counties in the area, and owes it name to the aforementioned railway.  Altoona Curve offers so much when it comes to enjoying live sport. A classic ballpark that is in no way overwhelming. It's intimate setting means you feel completely apart of the occasion, rather than just another ticket holder.  The ballpark itself, named the People's Natural Gas Field, has many seating areas - ranging from picnic style seating at field level, terraced seating, adult only areas, family areas and a hill where families can play - all whilst the baseball game supplies the drama for the evening.  What is unique about watching baseball in Altoona is the fact that right next door is Lakemont Park. A recreation park home to mini-golf, kart tracks and a rollercoaster. Not just any rollercoaster either, this is the famous Skyliner, which called New York home in the 1960's and 70's until a move to Altoona in the 1980's. The Skyliner sits just the other side of the boundary fence to the ballpark, meaning when you take a ride you have incredible views of the action within the PNG Field (to give it its shorter name). And as for as I know, watching live sport whilst doing loop the loops is a pretty unique experience. A baseball game here, where many stars of the future are honing their skills, is a brilliant way to not only take in one of America's oldest sporting traditions but soak up the real culture and atmosphere of a destination. You chat to people, understand the area; it's at these more intimate sporting events where you really get to know a the area you are visiting. What with Pittsburgh's endless amount of hiking trails, kayaking and live sport options this is an area which loves the outdoors, and the thrill of live sport. I have travelled an hour north of Pittsburgh by hiring a car to visit Foxburg, a small village which is the home of the oldest continuously used golf club in America. It all began when Joseph Mickle Fox in the late 19th century travelled to the UK for a cricket match he was involved in. Whilst there he decided to take a look at St, Andrews Golf Course in Scotland. This is where he met, and struck up a friendship with Tom Morris, known as the 'Grand Old Man of Golf'. Morris showcased the game of golf to Fox, and the American was truly smitten with this new game he had discovered. Seeing his joy, Morris gave Fox some essentials - clubs, balls, the rules... and with that Joseph Fox headed home to Pennsylvania excited to build a few golf holes on his estate so he could play the game. It was here where he noticed the game was catching on. Friends would regularly play with him and there was a general excitement about this new game. Witnessing the enthusiasm, Fox then decided to donate some of his nearby land in order for a bigger course to be built. It was named the Foxburg Country Club and included lawn tennis courts, picnic areas and eventually, nine holes - some of which were rather inspired by the features Fox had come across at St. Andrews. It was 1887 when Foxburg Country Club was established, and it has been proven at senate trials that Foxburg is the oldest continuously-in-use golf course in America. That is quite a status for this charming little village - and well worth a visit for anyone near the area, who loves their golf. It is sad however to see that as golf swept America, Foxburg was left behind. It may well house the American Golf Hall of Fame and have the all important 'Oldest Golf Course in the United States' sign on the roadside, but you do feel it should have more recognition, more exposure. Or perhaps, the fact that the course that got golf started in America is somewhat of a secret only adds to its charm. You can only reach Foxburg Country Club by car. It is about an hour's drive north of Pittsburgh and sits just off the I80 Interstate. And along the way, I not only experience the great Allegheny River, but also one of America's best ballparks. Much like in my previous episode, this is a great example of how Pittsburgh mixes adventures within an urban hub and live sport. It will cost you $19 to rent a kayak for an hour. You do need to book online but unless there is a major group booking you should be fine. When I booked, there was an issue with the website, so I just turned up and there were plenty of kayaks available. Website: https://www.ventureoutdoors.org/kayak-pittsburgh/ Kayak Pittsburgh Downtown is situated underneath the Roberto Clemente Bridge on the north shore, right next to PNC Park. There a few rules to remember, mostly about not getting in the way of boat traffic on the rivers, but all in all, you are free to explore as much as you like in which ever direction you wish to go. The current tends to be pretty manageable so you shouldn't have any issues paddling against it - if the current gets too strong, you won't be able to rent a kayak. What is great for sport lovers as well as adventure seekers is the fact you can combine the two so well in Pittsburgh. With PNC Park on the north shore, you can get right up to this historic sporting venue. You will even be able to see into the stadium's big screen, meaning if you time your kayak for when the Pirates are playing, you will not only be able to pick up the atmosphere from PNC Park, but also watch the game on the screen. The best of both worlds! - something I've said a few times about Pittsburgh. Of course, with baseball games being a little longer than an hour, once you have returned your kayak you can head straight into PNC Park to take in the city from another angle, and the views you get of both the Allegheny River and Downtown Pittsburgh are extraordinary. Three tips to enjoy PNC Park to the fullest: 1. Buy a ticket in section 317. This is where you will find the cheapest $20 tickets and also it is where you want to be to get the very best views of the city. *The only bar on the 3rd tier is also right next to 317, should you be interested. 2. Don't worry about turning up with bags. There is a no bag policy at PNC Park but there is a bag drop right outside. So if you have been out kayaking and need to store backpacks, you can do. It will cost $10. 3. Download the MLB app. It's free to download, but this is the only way your ticket will be scanned - so that it is a contactless process. All details are in the video above. I hope in this video you get another really good insight into what Pittsburgh can offer. The city in western Pennsylvania packs a punch when it comes to activities for adventure seekers and has an equal amount of live sport for sport lovers. It's no surprise that Pennsylvania has the most open trails in the USA. In Pittsburgh alone, there are a multitude of trails to hike close to the city - including the wonderful Mount Washington. Situated on the south side of of Pittsburgh, the trails that weave through the woodlands are a breath of fresh air compared to downtown life, but equally still close enough so you can get the best of both worlds. You'll take the Duquesne Incline from river level to reach the Emerald View Park trail, which begins at the Points of View statue - a walk to your right once disembarked from the incline. It is both at the top of the funicular railway and at Points of View that the incredible vista of Pittsburgh are visible. *TIP: Head up to these high points later in the day as the view can be a little foggy, together with the sun rising from the east that makes the views back to the city not 100% clear in the mornings. From the start point and to follow my footsteps, you'll take the Emerald View trail into the woodlands and follow the path to your right. After around an hour or so walking this moderate trail you will come to an opening and the path will take you to a road named Greenleaf Street. It is this road that will lead you down to the West End Bridge. The bridge will mean a pause to the tranquility of the woodlands, but you will get amazing views of Pittsburgh's three rivers and once over one of Pittsburgh's 446 bridges, you will then join the Three Rivers Heritage trail. This will lead you back towards downtown Pittsburgh past some of America's most iconic sporting venues. Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers and PNC Park, where the Pittsburgh Pirates play will both come into view on your left with the river and more great views of the city on your right. Eventually, you will come to the end of this walking expedition at the Roberto Clemente Bridge. Can you really leave Manhattan in the morning and climb Breakneck Ridge before lunch? This is what one of the best hiking day trips from New York City is actually like. WOW! One minute you're in the hustle and bustle of Manhattan and then 90 minutes later, you're in the glorious Hudson Highlands. Here's my guide to hiking the Breakneck Ridge loop in the Hudson Highlands State Park, close to Cold Spring, 90-minutes north of New York City. ------------------- HI! I'm Sports Travel Tom. From Grand Central, you will get the train to Cold Spring which will take about 90-minutes. *TIP - sit on the left hand side of the train to get the best views of the Hudson as you travel north. The price of a return ticket is $30. Arriving into Cold Spring, you'll walk towards the centre of this quaint little town, there is an excellent coffee shop called Rincon Argentino on the left before you walk underneath the railway onto the main street. The owner has good knowledge of the hiking trails and has great conversation before you embark on your hiking adventure. From Cold Spring you will walk up the town's main street for two blocks before turning left on Fair Street. You will follow this road along until you eventually reach the Park Office which is the start point for many trails in the area. For the Breakneck Ridge hike, you'll need to walk along the Cornish trail and follow signs to the Breakneck Ridge trailhead. The last stretch of this little warm up walk is walking through the tunnel on a mina road. It's a little disconcerting but you'll be through it within a couple of minutes. When you exit you will be greeted by the park officer's who are situated at the beginning of the Breakneck Ridge trail and can talk you through it all. Don't forget to pick up a map, so you can keep checking the route you are taking. From the start, it is a steep 3-hour climb upwards. It's a scramble 90% of the way until you get to USA flag, which is an incredible viewing point and a great spot for a packed lunch. Don't forget to take at least 3-litres of water! You'll need plenty. After the USA flag point, you'll climb again, although from here there are a couple of alternative paths which bypass the steepest of scrambles - but get you to the same point. You're heading for the junction onto the Yellow trail, which marks the point when the climbing is done and you are now heading back downhill towards the Park Office and Cold Spring. The decline begins with rocky steps before turning into a proper path through the woods. Eventually you will join back onto the Cornish trail, the same trail you began on. *TIP - When you arrive back at Cold Spring, get some food and drinks at the wonderful Cold Spring Depot bar. It has a great outdoor terrace and is full of other hikers sharing their stories of the day. Things to remember: - You must take more water than you need. Whilst this hike is doable for non-professional hikers (like me) it will take its toll. I drank a good 3-litres and still wanted more. - I hiked this trail in late June on a hot and humid day. Take a hat, plenty of sunscreen, food and first aid kits. - Don't forget insect repellent. Ticks are in the area and there are warnings about them. It is good practice to regularly reapply. When you get home, take a shower and have thorough check to see if any ticks have attached themselves to you. I was fine, but better to be safe than sorry. - If you are unfamiliar with the area, go at the weekend when other people will be climbing with you. It's comforting knowing other people are around. This hike is incredible, one of the best I've done and well worth the effort it takes. I begin my journey in New York City with three great adventures you can do in one day in the city, for a total cost of $27. New York City can be frantic, and these adventures will fill your day and set you up for a well earned meal in the evening. I started in Central Park for a morning row. It's worth checking the times of the rowing boats on the lake in the park, they can change often, but late morning at the weekends and you should be set. You'll need to take cash with you as that is the only payment they'll except. It's $20 for the boat which can take up to 4 people. You'll also need to take $20 in cash for a deposit - if you go over your one-hour allotted time, money will be deducted from the deposit - so keep an eye on the time! It's a great location to be on the water, even though the lake can get busy, there is plenty of room and to sit back, take in Central Park, the Manhattan skyline and people watch until your heart is content... which you'll find it is after an hour. One note about rowing in Central Park - peaceful yes, relaxing yes, perfect photo opportunity, yes - the only (and it's a small thing) little aspect that gets in the way of your serene surroundings is the noise of the oars! You'll see what I mean in the video. My second adventure of the day was a cycle across Brooklyn Bridge. From Central Park, get the Green 6 Subway towards Downtown to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall from 77th St - which is a couple of blocks east of the park in line with the lake. I downloaded the Citi Bike app which is free and there is a bike station right when you come out of the Subway. Once you have your mode of transport - you have an option of electric and normal bicycles - you are straight onto the cycle lane and footpath that takes you across Brooklyn Bridge. A world of warning, you need to have your wits about you! There are people everywhere at times, and even though the footpath and cycle lane are meant to be separate, inevitably people walk on the cycle lane meaning you'll be weaving in and out of lots of walkers. Watch out for very quick cyclists too who will race up behind you. Never-the-less, it's a great little adventure and once you are at the Brooklyn side, you can check the app to see where the closest bike station is with free spaces. The cost of this little adventure? It all depends on how long you cycle for, but for me it was 50 minutes and a cost of just over $7. Lastly, and this is perfect after the assertions of rowing and cycling, is a gentle late afternoon stroll along the High Line which begins around the new Hudson Yards development in West Manhattan. The High Line is an old disused elevated railway line, it went into disrepair for many years until it was transformed into an inner-city oasis and walking path. This adventure is free, about 1.5 miles long and a superb way to soak up the city as the sun gets lower in the sky. There are plenty of places to sit and just let the world happen in front of you. IS AL RABI MOUNTAIN THE BEST SUMMIT IN THE UAE? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgIv1nUK9nc&t=346s ------------------------- To celebrate the news that the Highlander series of hiking trails is coming to the UAE, I had a conversation with TV adventurer, Ryan Pyle as we hiked Jebel Jais and reached the UAE's highest public point for sunset. Ryan is an ambassador for the Highlander hiking trails and as he is currently based in the UAE during the pandemic, it seemed only fitting that we experienced some of what will become the UAE's Highlander trail in Ras Al Khaimah. We talked about his love for the Highlander hiking trails, what he thinks of the UAE mountains and some of the most incredible trails he has embarked on. There are also some new hiking trails on the upper Ghaf trail on Jebel Jais. These new walkways mean you no longer have to walk on the road for the short stretch which you used to have to do. The only way to really appreciate its scale is from the skies, in the peace and tranquility of a hot air balloon. I took a flight with Balloon Adventures Dubai to tell a little bit of the story of the Arabian Desert and to showcase to you the incredible light on the sand dunes as well as a stunning sunrise over the Hajar Mountains. The Hajar Mountains is the biggest mountain range in the eastern Arabian Peninsula - and the mark of the end of the Arabian Desert to the east. If you would like to experience what is showcased in the video, head to Balloon Adventures Dubai: https://www.ballooning.ae/hot-air-balloon-ride/ It is an early start, around a 4.30am pick up from the city of Dubai before an hour's drive into the desert. Once arrived at the take off point, the balloon will be filled with 350,000 cubic feet of hot air and you will climb aboard after a safety briefing. You'll effortlessly leave the ground and begin climbing to around 4,000 feet where you will witness spectacular views of the Arabian Desert, Hajar Mountains and if you are lucky, on a clear day, even back to the city of Dubai. The Arabian Desert is home to such rich stories, and as I talk about in the video, it is also sometimes a lush and fertile landscape when the Indian Ocean monsoons move further north. Don't worry, you won't get caught in these, it only happens roughly every 23,000 years. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!
